"40Million PS2’s Sold!"

PlayStation2 has smashed the 40 million sales mark around the world.
Sony has proudly announced the worldwide sales of its beloved black box to span over 40 million, from its launch in November 2000 up until of September 17 this year. Europe and PAL regions claim 12.06 million units in total, North America has 17.01 machines and Japan has sold 10.97 units.
"The PlayStation2 user-base across Europe, Africa, Middle East Australia and New Zealand continues to accelerate and to grow the market for computer entertainment on TV based consoles," said Chris Deering, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "The recent and forthcoming line-up of new software titles on PlayStation2 is the strongest in our history. Reviews have been outstanding, and the range of choice between now and Christmas is just awesome."

With such a massive amount of sales is there any realistic chance Sony can be toppled?
I own the three consoles and personally I prefer Xbox, but with some great games coming are Nintendo and Microsoft always going to be second best?

Its almost unbelieveable isn`t it. For a long time, I thought the race would be very close, and that the console war really would be a war. Its so weird seeing how much the PS2 is completely outselling the competition, making it almost as dominant as the PS1.

Still I think your right again, I'm still unsure of how the "other two" next gen consoles are going to come close to anything like the sales of the PS2.

It wouldn`t take long if we put a link in the FOG chat forum, such as "(Nintendo - Rare) + (Rare / X-Box) = more PS2 domination".

Doesn`t matter if its true, an exaggeration or what, but that would certainly start a fairly nasty thread!

Seriously though, I think we`re about there. It could be worked out for each country, seeing as there will be more per second in America than the Uk, but I really can`t be bothered.

As for having time on my hands - my first lecture was an 08:15, and my next is a 14:15. I`m sitting here trying to convince myself to go swimming, but so far no luck :D

I would agree with you on that, your calculations look about right so £405m from sales compared to £300 for microsoft for their one sale of their X-Box :-)

Oh and any X-Box owners, that last bit was a joke so no need to start thinking about hijacking this thread for a console war please.

If we take roughly the middle of the release dates, say July, then its been 2 years and 3 months, 365+365+92=822 days.

That means:

48662 per day.
2028 per hour.
33 per minute.
0.56 per second.

Thats 1.78 seconds per console sale, at varying prices. Taking the price as £200 which it was for a large amount of the sales, thats £200 in 1.78 seconds, from consoles alone, giving an hourly gain of £405,515.00

Well it would be interesting to know though....didn't realise Japan had thiers so early. My memory has faded alot recently but somehow I have 24/11/00 implanted in my brain :D

I think Japan had PS2s in May, or possibly even April, but still, the estimate you came up with earlier isn`t going to be too far wrong. It`ll be a little over, but enough for everyone to get the idea.

24th November 2000 is correct for England, as for the rest of Europe and the world well I have no idea. Couldn't be that much difference though could there?

I know Japan had their boxes before us and I think that the US probably had thiers before us but not sure by how long.....oh well we'll just have to wait until Wookiee turns up to enlighten us all.
