Just lately, thanks to the three new next-gen consoles, a lot of past glitches have been rectified due to more advanced hardware and better game development. Games now look fantastic with stunning visuals, seem very real thanks to better AI, and sound a lot greater. However, some greats still suffer from glitches. The brilliant TOCA Race Driver had bad pop-up, and GT3 had poor AI, and I haven’t even got on to mentioning the poor lip-sync in FFX. But thankfully these days will soon be gone when technology will be so great that faults will be impossible. Probably. But supposing our real world was full of glitches. Supposing every time we walked around a corner a large building suddenly popped up out of now where. Well unfortunately in certain parts of this world, which cannot be named for legal reasons (America), glitches are a day-to-day problem. You see they have a God over there. He’s like the central processing unit of America and all sorts of problems can arise thanks to him. Here are some of the most apparent cases.

*Case Study 1- Franks Pop-up*

The desert is a terrible place. Get in to trouble and the chances are you wont survive. However, one man called Frank was determined to survive when his car unfortunately ran out of fuel, right in the middle of the desert. Frank took his gas can (sorry but this is set in America) and some food and drink he had in the trunk, then set off in search of a local gas station. Five days past and a worn out, half-dead Frank was still looking. At this stage, the gas was no longer important; but survival was. The only use of the gas can now was for companionship. Frank was still determined to find help though. So Frank and Mr. Gas Can continued. After the tenth day Frank had lost all hope. He was never going to get out of the desert. There was just mountains stretching for kilometers and kilometers. So because of this, Frank decided to kill himself. He licked the inside of the gas can in an attempt to poison himself (don’t try this at home). As the gas was taking effect, Frank decided to take a quick wander and think about his life. As he took one step forward something suddenly appeared. It was a massive city covered in neon lights saying ‘Free food and drink’, and it was only two meters in front of Frank. Frank then collapsed and died.

-Conclusion-

If there were no pop-up then Frank would have survived. He would have clearly seen the City ahead and wouldn’t have poisoned himself. Verdict- Pop-up is a killer.

*Case Study 2- Mary’s glitched Shelby Cobra*

Mary was very passionate about her cars. Unfortunately she never had enough money for the car she wanted, a Red Shelby Cobra. One day though, she luckily found $50,000 down a drain. She now had enough. She looked high and low for the car she wanted, but unfortunately only found a couple of Yellow and Blue Cobras, which were too common for her liking. Finally, after much searching, she found a Red one. But it was a wreck. Then, one week later she found another one. She went round to the owners to enquire and they said she could have it for $50,000. She looked out the window, saw the beauty, and quickly handed over her cash. As she walked outside she could see the car was in great condition. Suddenly, as she approached, she saw the car had no bumper. It had no doors either. Hell, it even had no engine! She quickly walked backwards away from the car and it appeared fine again. She walked back up and it appeared to be a wreck again. Oh dear.

-Conclusion-

Damage glitching has been a problem for a long time. For example, on the original TOCA game a rival car can look perfect in the distance, then when you drive up to it all the damage suddenly appears. Clearly this problem wasted Mary a lot of money.
Verdict- Don’t waste your money on bugged games.

*Case Study 3- Randy and the bad Collision detection*

Randy was your everyday friendly citizen. He would walk around greeting people and generally being nice. One day after grub, Randy decided to go for a walk. Everything was going fine until he came across a gang of Rednecks. Randy decided to steer clear and walked well away from them. However, as he was passing about a meter away from them he suddenly felt himself bump into something. He looked around and nothing was close to him. But out of the blue one of the Rednecks walked up to Randy and started punching him. “Why yo walk inna me?” Before Randy could answer, he had his face smashed in. After a visit to the hospital, Randy was told he had his lower bits beat up so much he would never be able to have kids.

-Conclusion-

Clearly Randy was nowhere near the Rednecks, but because of poor collision detection it seems that there was some contact. Also he was punched in the face. Again poor collision detection meant that the damage was done lower down than where he was really hit. This is also the case in racing games like London Racer. You could be nowhere near a lamppost but still hit it meaning the race is over for you.
Verdict- Bad Collision detection ruins your chances of kids/winning races.

*Case Study 4- Neville’s Slow-Down*

Neville’s not really keen on his job at the docks shipment factory. His days are too boring and generally make him fed-up. Today though an irregular occurrence happened. Due to too many people in the office at once, a lot of slow down was being caused. The fact that it was raining didn’t help either. That meant God had to process not only all the people in the office, but also the pretty rain effects. As God hadn’t had his coffee it meant Neville’s office was suffering from large slow down. So Neville’s day went from 10 hours to 20 hours long, and he also had to put up with juddery movement. Neville eventually died of exhaustion in the 20th hour.

-Conclusion-

Slow down basically baggers the whole experience. It’s especially bad if the game isn’t much cop to start with ie. Jet Ion GP. Verdict- Slow Down makes gaming a prolonged chore.

*Case Study 5- Larry’s Lip-Sync*

No, its not the new body part shaped kitchen sinks at B & Q, it is in fact a big problem, especially for Larry. You see Larry was a wannabe singer. Over in America they have their very own ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ show. Well lucky Larry got a part on the show. He had done all his preparation and he finally got around to his performance. Unfortunately he was suffering from Lip-Sync. So as he sang all the words came out at a two second delay, something Tidus out of Final Fantasy X would be proud of. However the audience wasn’t very happy. Larry was accused of miming and was thrown of the show. Lets just hope the Americans don’t see the British version of the show else all the UK contestants would be in trouble…

-Conclusion-

Watch any DVD on a poor DVD player and you will see Lyp-Sync in action. It can dull the whole experience and make the character look like a Pratt when they are speaking. Larry unfortunately felt the full effects. Verdict- Lip-sync. A bigger delayed reaction than one of Robby Savages dives.

So clearly these problems inherited from games are a big worry in America. It’s just a shame the AI wasn’t so good on a certain German F1 driver…

Thanks for reading,
Nath.
