For anyone who didn't know this, apparently Yuji Naka has confirmed that PSO on the X-Box will enable you to download extra stuff from X-Box Live.
:-)

Be interesting to see what becomes downloadable. Possibly extra missions, weapons and eve characters/character parts.
Could add some extra life to the game. :-)

I think the later PSO game allows player vs player - otherwise the main part of it is players vs enviornment.

And yes its possible to play the whole game without ever going online.

I don't really want to worry about having to pay for all the internet charges that will come from using this game, but I'm just going to wait until I get a part time job to pay for it. Otherwise I will play the updated versions of the original games PS 1, 2 +3 on the GBA, sometime next year.

Yeah I hate that. Turn based is more reliant on you out leveling your opponents so you can overwhelm them rather than skill.

It is also more realistic (well if that is actually possible) in a way than turn-based, where you can attack and dodge at will. Instead of the old "Oh I've had a go at you old sport, I believe it's your turn" you then get killed by some special attack which you can't dodge.
That's why PSO Rules!

Yeah I prefer real time fighting to turn based. I think real time is more dependant on a players skill than just selecting the right option in a turn based fight.

Basically, it is played both online and offline. You can play through the whole story on your own if you like.
But the main fun is playing with other people. You can get other people to help you through the story, or play special online missions (which tend to based around clearing out a certain amount of rooms of enemies).

I'll run you through a typical online experience on PSO...
You select to go online on the main menu. From here you are taken to the lobby of a large ship. You'll notice other players characters walking around the lobby, chatting and maybe arranging games together.

You can walk around and mingle, or if you want to see other people, you can walk upto this help desk in the middle of the lobby and select to be transported to another ship.
Think of the ships as chatrooms with different players in.

Once you have met another player (or have a group of 4 of you), you are ready to play the game together. You set up or join a game at the main desk and then walk into the transporter where you'll end up in an area that leads to three rooms. One is a shop where things can be bought or sold. Another is the area where you can arrange a mission for cash and the other is the main transporter which takes you to the planet surface below.

Whichever you decide, your friends can play alongside you, using weapons they may have collected from either playing online or offline before.
If you become friends with someone who has much higher levels than you, they might be nice enough to really help you out - giving you weapons, money, etc to help you become tougher.
Your levels gradually increase and some weapons can't be used until you reach a certain level - but it gives you plenty of incentive to level up.

Once your at a high level yourself, you might find a newbie friend and you in turn can help them. As you play, you ccan bring your chums back from the dead by healing them with your characters powers and items.
This however leads to the nasty gits you may encounter.
In the original game, you couldn't hurt other players, but there were thieves around.
When an enemy kills you, you fall to the floor - dropping the weapon you were using along with any money you have on you.
If a nasty sod saw this, they could pick up these items then run - leaving you to rot on the floor where you would end up transported back to the main ship without your prized weapon and money.

As far as money goes, theres another desk next to the shop where you can put items and money in - protecting them from this kind of thing.
You would only lose the weapon in your hand when you were knocked out, so if you had it in your inventory, but not being used, you will still have it.
So a word of advice - make sure you can trust the people in your group before showing off with your prized blades. ;-)
Either that - or have a lot of confidence in your skills (this will come as you reach higher levels).

Thats basically PSO. Don't expect much money from doing the online missions though. ;-)

Something really strange - just after I finished typing my previous post, I switched pages to a Japanese Geocities page which I'd been browsing, and there, in front of me was a massive anime ad for Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2. Very spooky :S.

http://www.geocities.co.jp/MusicStar/1022/ is the URL, but it ain't exactly exciting.

I'd rather get an Xbox version than GameCube or PS2 on the basis that Xbox Live is so much more organised than other online services. And the fact that I hate shelling out for expensive peripherals.

If it's the same setup as the DC version, which I guess it will be, then yes, you can play offline, but the real fun is in teaming up with 3 others online and going round kicking the crap out of the monsters.

The combat is all real time, none of that turn based crap you have to put up with in other games.
