The name says it all. It is the fourth game in the award winning Mech Warrior series from Microsoft. And it's all about Vengeance.

You play as Duke Ian Dresari, a Royal Mech Warrior, who has proven his skills many times in the clan wars. Having just finished your latest battle, you receive a message, handed to you by your solemn - faced commander. Your parents are dead. The Royal family has been torn apart, your planet, Kentares five, is under an evil dictatorship by your brother William Dresari. Your mission, which you have already chosen to accept, is revenge.

The opening FMV is top class. The palace is under attack. You see The Royal defence lance get into their battle Mechs. Omega lead and one other unit make it out of the hanger, but then a volley of long range missiles take it out. You all that lies between the enemy and the Palace. Your last remaining lance Mate is taken out. You make a report to base ‘ I’ll hold them here as long as I can’. You die protecting your people.

Then the main menu is thrust upon you. I'll start by talking about the campaign mode. This is essentially the heart of the game. The first cut scene shows you receiving the message and swearing revenge. Then the mission screen appears. You can chose your Mech from the drop-down menu on the right, but you only have the ‘Shadow Cat’ to begin with. Points of interest are shown on the map. You soon notice a communications box in the top - left. This is where people contact you. There are no messages to begin with. The first mission sees you and one other Mech Warrior target a small convoy of SCUDS. The first mission is easy. One thing I love about the game is that you don't ‘magically earn’ extra Mech's. During a game, if you destroy any enemy Mech, vehicle or installation, you're salvage teams will steal what they can. Weapons to put on your Mech’s are readily available, but new chassis are hard to come by. You’ll notice the missions getting harder, but on recruit it should be quite easy to complete. As you play through the missions, you begin to get people to command on missions. On some can have up to 4 lance mates, if you have enough Mech's. Another great thing is, if one of your Mech's is destroyed, it is gone for good! In the last mission you must use your battle-weary Mech in a one on one with William!

The controls are very easy-to-use, well placed, and easy to learn. The game runs very smoothly, and the fully 3D environments are excellent. The graphics are crystal clear, with the details on Mech's and weapons fire very highly detailed. The sound effects are great, with weapons fire, your Mech's Computer, and your lance mates on the comm- link are all clear and realistic. The game ranges from very easy to very hard, depending on the level and difficulty setting. The plot is amazing, and if you choose to attack an enemy installation instead of rescuing your sister, your Mech engineer leaves you, and does not help you again!

But wait, there are still many more options to go! Instant action lets you chose any Mech, and up to 4 lance mates! You can choose to play any one of the single player missions, with any Mech and lance mate. You even chose your lance mates skill level and the difficulty. You can also choose whether to play during the day or at night! You can also choose training in this mode. This gets you used to basic operation of your Mech. It includes firing, moving and lots more. Another mode is wave. Choose your lance mates, enemy Mech's, difficulty, day or night, how many lives you get and how many waves of up to four enemy Mech's you will battle through. They are also a vast amount of levels to choose from. There is also ‘Master Trials’. This randomly chooses all the options above, and pits you against three master Mech's. Can you beat all three?

The final game mode is multi-player. Once you have set up an Internet connection, you can play amongst the Battle - Meching world! There are mind-boggling amounts of options, including escort, destruction, capture the flag, king of the hill, team variants of all the above, and many more. If you host a game, there can be as few or as many restrictions as you like. Choose from any of the maps in the game, or download more! The server is very fast and stable, so expect total online fun and satisfaction. There's event in - game chat, to co-ordinate attacks!

And then there is the MechLab. This is where you choose an existing Mech chassis, and modify it! If you're Mech builds up to much weapon or surroundings - created heat, it will shut down, leaving you as a sitting duck. So, you can add more heat sinks to help dissipate it. You can choose to camoflauge your Mech, and change its top speed. However, during all this, you must keep within the weight restrictions! Now you can choose to add electronic countermeasures. There are jump jets, light amplification devices, anti-missile systems and many more. Now changed the weapons. Each Mech has different racks for weapons, of different sizes and categories. There are beam (laser), ammunition/projectile-based weapons, and missiles. Some racks can even hold anything and are called ‘omni’ racks. There are loads of weapons to choose from, just make sure there is room on your Mech, and you are within the weight allowance! Finally, change armour settings for each body part, and use it in any ‘Instant Action’ mission!

One other thing that I must mention is the quality of the manuals. They are excellent. They are detailed, user friendly, useful and very important. This is one game where you really need to read the manual!

This game keeps up the Mech Warrior name, and is the best yet. It has an excellent plot, great graphics, amazing sounds and so much more, you really should buy it! (It is on two CD’s and needs a quite well equipped PC) Ten out of Ten, a must buy!

Delta Force Land Warrior is a great game. (Notice the FULL STOP!)

You take control of a range of different characters, each having their own strengths and weaknesses, a speciality weapon, and a nickname

My favourite character is 'longbow' who is a sniping expert, as he is very stealthy, and uses my favourite weapon - the sniper burst rifle. The rest of this review will concentrate mainly on the first level - 'operation monument'.

You take your chosen character into battle, and you have the same weapons whoever you chose. For this level you chose from a sniper, an expert with the burst sniper rifle, a gunman, and expert with an MP5, or a grenadier, who is highly competent in using a frag grenade!

This level involves you being dropped in the desert by helicopter, with a small selection of weapons including; an MP5, a sniper burst rifle, a pistol, a rocket launcher, frag grenades and a combat knife. Your first objective is to clear out the Sphinx, which has been overrun by terrorists.

The first thing you notice about the game is the superb detail. Even the inside of the drop helicopter is very well visualised. From the moment you begin, you can see the great graphics, especially on the desert, stretching right out to the horizon. The first person view mode gives immense detail on the weapons. The bodywork of the enemies is superb, and you can see where you shot them. Structures, even in the background are highly detailed. There is one other graphical effect I must talk about. The explosion effects from a frag grenade or rocket launcher. Throw a grenade in a thin corridor of ancient Egyptian pyramid, and you get great explosions. It does not just leave a black mark on the wall, either. The bricks are blackened, some more than others, dust falls from the ceiling, and cracks and holes appear in the walls.

You enter the Sphinx, and notice the amazing enemy AI level. As you begin to enter, two very 'clever' snipers appear to your right. When you see them, they hide, and only take a few shots when they are able to. This game does not use a 'health' system like many first person shooters. Instead, one headshot kills you, but you can be shot one hundred times in the hand, and you'll survive! The same system is used for the enemies, too. And I must say, they way they die is fantastic! Instant death from a headshot, a prolonged, painful death if shot in the stomach.

Take out the snipers, and carry on down the underground passageways of the Spin. Now you begin to notice the sound effects. The music changes to an eerie drone, and all is quiet. And then you encounter an enemy, and a barrage of machine gun fire fills the silence! Now you can really appreciate the realistic sound effects!

Throughout the missions, you will be contacted by your commander. He will give you mission updates, and new objectives. This is very useful, as the missions are so large. you can easily get lost! He also tells you when 'hostiles are coming your way'!

The controls are easy and efficient, using the forwards and backward keys to move in that way, the left and right keys to sidestep, and the mouse to aim and turn. The mouse buttons fire the weapons, activate the sniper scope, and if you have one the mouse wheel will change weapons.

The FMV sequences are a little disappointing, thought I am glad that more time was spent on in - game graphics than on FMV's!

This is a very difficult game, step around a corner carelessly, and one shot in the head could see your game ending! On the subject of your death, when it occurs, the camera shifts to third person, and you view your demise while your commander shouts ' Gas Can is down, repeat, Gas Can is down‘!

The game comes with an extensive multiplayer mode. It uses the game central server, so it is faster than most. Play an online team game, or a death match, with all the single player weapons, maps, and characters. I believe a map editor is also available, so this increases the fun immensely.

Delta Force Land Warrior is a great game full of glorious graphics, superb sounds, perfect playability, marvellous multiplayers, amazing addictiveness, and a wicked weapons, that will keep you playing for ages. Hopefully, an add-on disk will soon be forthcoming, as this game is great, and deserve s to live on!

The only thing missing from the game is that genre defining edge, only found in games like unreal tournament and the 'sim' series. Delta force does however, have a great finesse, which puts a great deal above most other first person shooters, especially on the PC!

I highly recommend this game to anyone with a Pc; it is amazing, and well worth £28. A must buy for all shooter or stealth fans!
