As you may or may not know, Batman vs. Superman, the mother of all superhero movies, is being planned and scheduled for a release in 2004. As a huge fan of both the comic book characters and the movies (well, the first two, the last two for each franchise sucked), this si exciting news. Here is some info I dug up on the net for anyone who is interested, including comments from director Wolfgang Petersen…

Batman vs. Superman won't dwell on the heroes' origins. Instead, the titular titans cross paths (and figurative swords) over a case involving both Metropolis and Gotham. "Their individual crises are what pit them against each other," says Petersen. "Superman [stands by] his old thing of 'truth, justice, and the American way' - oh, boy, he gets into trouble with that one!" Meanwhile the brooding Batman "gets into a case so violent that he's about to lost it. [But] it's a superhero film, so of course at the end they join forces."

While he downplays any serious overtones, Petersen says that post-Sept. 11 he wants to create more realistic working conditions for his protagonists. "It doesn't deal with a political situation like [the attacks], but it deals with the morality of this world right now and the gray zone we're in. Just to see how superheroes work in today's world is interesting."

The article goes on to say that they are looking for a few good men (in their late 20s to early 30s) to suit up for the leads.

The director says he's looking for thesps who "can really act and give complexity and emotions, but would have the fun of being a great superhero and maybe pump up a little bit."
The shortlist of actors, for both roles, includes Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, James Franco, Nicholas Cage, Christian Bale, Jude Law and Paul Walker, as well as others like Josh Hartnett (wtf?). Early reports indicate that Farrell as Batman and Law as Superman is the most likely.

Who would you like to see play the roles? In my opinion, the best Batman was Michael Keaton, and despite him saying he would never do another Batman (turning down the two sequels since Batman Returns already), he brought the right amount of intensity and depth to the role (unlike George Clooney, who was unremittingly awful). As for Superman, that’s anyone guess, but Jude Law? He’s a bit wimpy to play the Man of Steel.

Your choices?

Funny how we take simple, three letter words like "who" for granted

Of course, that should be "then we'd see *who* was REALLY da bomb"

If Damon played Batman, he could fight Dare Devil... then we'd see was REALLY da bomb

(that will make no sense if A) you don't know that Ben Affleck is playing the Dare Devil or B) you've never seen a Smith film)

Yeah, I heard the Matt Damon thing too. It was in Empire. I think Damon is a brilliant actor, though he is usually making some gay serial killer who rides horses and plays golf touchy feely flick.

He'd rock as Batman. "Damon, you da bomb in Batman!"

Heh, actually the best crossover ever was Johnny Bravo meets Scooby Doo.

Or maybe Jay and Silent Bob meet Scooby Doo.

Heh.

Cage just doesn't LOOK like Superman. Dean Cain, he looked like Superman, but I think they'd want to keep away from the series, so he won't be used

Law? I think he's a great actor, but he doesn't suit the man of steel either

Sounds like an interesting film, two of the biggest comic book super heroes beating the crap out of each other. No doubt there will be a villain somewhere in the film if both superman and batman eventually team up.

As for the casting, well it could be anyone. I remember Nicolas Cage was rumoured to play superman in a new superman film, and he certainly is built for the role. Only thing is he can't act. I just hope has not chosen for the film, as he could spoil it with no existent acting ability. If he is chosen, I'll be cheering for the super hero he'll fight against.
