Its been hyped up for months, now the day is upon us The Playstation2 has finally arrived. I`ve just been into town, not lucky enough myself to be able to afford or get a PS2. But there does seem to be a shortage of consoles,...maybe Sony has made its First Bad move.
We all know that the release Date for the PS2 was put back here, and that Sony decided to cut the British supplies here to supply the US market. But I dont really believe that the British Gamer can be treated badly anymore...we pay more for our consoles, and our games than any other country in the world, our games are 17% slower(due to the PAL TV system) and we get our games Last.
With the X-box on the Horizon next year aswell as Nintendos Gamecube, it may be that Sony has to fight for Second place with Nintendo and Microsoft in the U.K. Because down at the shops today alot of People were looking over those Dreamcast and DVD bundles as a Real alternative.
And why not...Sega was the dominant force in the UK in the 16 bit era, and they didnt let us down then. The Dreamcast has alot of good Games out, and more must have games than the Playstation2 had on show today. I wouldnt be suprised if Sales of the Dreamcast excel expectations this Christmas, Segas Console already has a vast collection of great games such as Resident Evil Code Veronica, House of the Dead 2, Dead or Alive 2, Soul Caliber,Quake III and Ready to Rumble Boxing- Round 2...so why not buy a Dreamcast, I see no reason not too. Special Reserve have a particularly good Dreamcast Package bundled with a multiregion DVD player for the same price as the PS2.

What do you get???

From Special Reserve- Dreamcast All Region DVD bundle

A Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure, Chu Chu Rocket, an Official Controller, BT approved modem and RF lead
Plus a Encore Direct 450 All Region DVD player and Scart Lead.

All the above for only £299.98

My advice is to get this bundle for Christmas, along with some of the other great games for the Dreamcast and some DVDs. The Dreamcast looks like its spearheading the Sega revival in the UK, and Sony will probably end up in Second place.

I think I have to stick up for Sony here. I mean, come on, the DC hardly had any dececnt games at lauch apart from Soul Caliber. Also, I don't care about the price, as I am sure I will be getting my money's worth, with around a whooping 100 games being released by February!! Also, I only want 2 games that are out at the moment, TimeSplitters, which looks like a brill game, and TTT. There also loads of new, promising, great coming out soon. AND another million consoles being released in Europe by January. You also can't judge the PS2 as you probably haven't played one, and it's only been out for 4 days!!!
Also, if Nintendo do what they did with the N64, making the games very, very expensive, then they will muck up, like the N64. And Jimmy, no offence, but that B******T you wrote about a "true, cheap console for true games": So I'm not a true gamer just 'cos I have a PSX and will be getting an PS2???
Thanks for reading, Ant.

I believe that Nintendo has no option but to release the Gamecube at an affordable price..

Reason 1, its main target audience is usually Kids, and the teenage audience..if this trend continues then as these groups have less money, nintendo has to make a console they can afford.
Reason 2, The X-box is competition..and Microsoft being filthy rich can subsidise the price of their console...so people buy it...ie both companys will produce a console, maybe even making a loss selling it...hopeing to regain profit with game sales.

In other words if its too expensive then Nintendo will not survive...theres too much competition.

It's way too much money for a game!

I think £30 is a reasonable price for a new game, with classic games relaunched at £20 after a year or so. But still if you shop around you can find some bargains.

The N64 was £250 at release, but it dropped to £200 after a few months. The launch titles Mario64, Waverace and Pilotwings64 were £49.99 each. The first 3rd party game Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was £59.99.

I wouldn't bet on the Gamecube being cheap. Remember when the N64 came out ? God that was expensive ! Wasn't it like £350 at first ? And that was without a game of any kind - not even a demo.

Then of course the games were £60 a go which is extortionate. I think thats one of the factors that shot Nintendo down pretty early.

Hopefully this time they'll sort themselves out and get things right.

It really does show how much we're conned when you see these consoles come down in price. You can pick up an N64 for under £100 now, a DC for £150 (with games !) and of course the PS1 has just dropped dramatically. Funny how these companies honestly can't give us a good price at launch but then miraculously find they can once a rival releases their new console.

Thing is, i'll never stop buying consoles i want at launch cause theres always that excitement of picking it up the day it comes out. Running out early so you can have your new dream machine at the earliest opportunity :-)

For the Dreamcast i was one of the people that went out at midnight to pick it up :-))
Thing is i stayed up all night playing it and i had work the next morning at 6am - 1:15pm. Despite being knackered from not having a minutes sleep all night, i was wide awake again by 1:15pm to run to the shops, withdraw my wages and buy more games for my newly worshipped DC ;-))

Yeah that sort of price is stupid to pay, the majority of PS2 games released at launch are available on the PC and/or Dreamcast both of which could be brought for the price people are picking up auctioned PS2s for.

Exactly ! Makes you laugh their paying £1500 to play games that are mostly on the Dreamcast anyway ;-))
