I think it's a great feature. It's what makes it that much harder than Advance Wars. In AW, you have, essentially, unlimited resources. If a characted dies in FE, I always restart the map- no question. I don't want to be left 20 hours into the game with hardly any members left. You end up genuinely caring for the characters... it's cool (if a little sad, I guess).
