So whats the big deal. The Ogre (My Boyfriend) has just spent all our savings buying the complete Babylon 5 on Video because he thinks it the best think ever, so know I'm gonna have to sit through hours and hours of episodes of the bloody thing. I just hope its good!

The really funny thing is he has just found out its coming out on DVD (oh b****r), and he is a bit p*ssed off.

So whats it like, any good? Whats it about? (I know its about space you idiot).

Actually, it's the other way around.

J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, originally went to Paramount with the pilot for B5. They said it had no future, as it went beyond the average viewers attention span. Most viewers, particularly in the US, apparently like everything wrapped up nicely in the hour, and don't like ongoing stories.

JMS didn't believe that, he believed that an audience was capable of putting in some effort and sticking with a 5-year storyarc. So he pressed ahead, eventually finding a home for the show at Warner Bros.

Strange, then, that after B5 started airing in the US, Paramount suddenly come up with a version of Star Trek based on a space station (DS9), and with many story parallels to B5. There are a number of websites out there which show the comparisons between B5 and DS9, and just how much DS9 ripped off from B5. I'm sure you can find them. :-)

Anyway, in short: Trek for dum-dums, B5 for the more intellectual sci-fi fan. :-)

Both DS9 and Voyager had ongoing plots that spread over the seven seasons that they ran for actually.

So what, I enjoyed it, well the episodes I did watch. I can see the similarities between B5 and ST but then again anything set in space since bears a resemblance to ST!

As Belldandy said, at least there was a story to B5 set over 5 seasons unlike ST which just carried on regardless until they got bored and finished it.

I still watch ST:NG and occasionally watch Enterprise and enjoy those but I really wished I'd watch the whole of B5 so I intend to get it and soon :-)

The difference being that Babylon 5 was interesting, was not simply "different alien species of the week" programming, had a proper plot, did not have spaceships that looked liked they'd rolled off the factory assembly line, and knew when to end the series... Star Trek just carried on baldly going *sad pun*

Cheers for that, I have watched quite a few of series one, two and three and then missed a big chunk and thought....whoa don't watch anymore you wont have a clue what's going on!

Thought the box sets would be a good idea, will take your advice and wait :D

It's great, but do not watch it until you have seen the end of season 2, or it will ruin a major major major plot in the series.

It's a great film though, earth gets pasted until...*snip*

Nothing like resurrecting old posts.

Watched most of the series and like Wookiee says "you miss one episode your knackered for the rest of the series" so I thought I'd get them on DVD.

Quick question, the film "In The Beginning" can you watch this before you watch the first series and will it ruin anything later on?

Was thinking of getting this first and then getting the series box sets as and when I want.

B5 is one of the best sci-fi shows ever made - intelligent and well-written.

As Belldandy says, you really need to watch every episode to make sense of it. The first season is a little confusing, as it is setting up a major story arc which lasts for the whole five seasons. Missing any episode will mean what comes later will make no sense.

Your boyfriend might also wish to buy the videos of "Crusade", which was a spin-off series - there are only seven of those though, because the series was canned after a falling-out with the channel that bought the rights to it (they wanted to change the storylines).
