It is percieved that the Xbox is about as welcome as a big wet fart in Japan, well ACCORDING to sales figures.
Yes these sales figures, saying, pretty much, that Xbox sells around 4,000 a week, GC around 15,000 and PS2 at 75,000.
Hmmm, 75000? A bit much? I think so.
Why? Well, while leafing though an old PS2 mag in my Bedroom(it had a MGS2 video with it) It came to a section based around Japan. It says, that during the Launch period for the PS2 in Japan, Sony managed to shift an unthinkable abount of 200, 000 in 3 weeks. Impressive you think.
Well if going buy current sales figures, sony sell 225,000 every 3 weeks, which has to be a lie. 75000 people buying a PS2, well over 2 years into its life, in the middle if the summer?!?
No, that must be wrong. Consoles sell the most at launch, due to hype and antisipation of owning the next cool bit of gaming hardware. You all know how Hyped the PS2 was, how on earth can the PS2 be outselling what it did at launch.
Japan loves games, but as a games market its now smaller than the US and all European countries combined. Its also shrinking but the European and US markets are rapidly expanding.
I wholy accept that the Xbox is doing poor in Japan, but I do question who on earth composes the figures and just how much Sony really is selling.

And the Xbox'smost impressive game? Halo. An FPS.
Japanese people never did like FPS games.

Japans pretty small and the centre of the country is mountanous so not many people live there. The cities are all at the edges and thats where the vast majority of the population live. Read in a geograpgy mag that the population is something like 50 Million.

Also, as I said before - it would be great to see just how many people live in Japan. Going by how many PS2's are apparently sold every week there, every household must have at least 2 or 3 of the consoles each by now.
Kinda shows the hostility there is in these forums towards the X-Box. Very few ever questioned the figures being posted up about the PS2 over the summer, but as soon as someone in here put some up on the X-Box in here, it was immediatly showered with posters saying "Thats BS ! I bet a stupid X-Box mag did those figures ! LIES ! LIES ! LIES !"
If I remember right, some even went on to say how reliable the likes of Ninty mags and sites are for figures. ;-))
I say Ninties cause we don't get many visitors from the Sony forum in here. The ones that do have PS2's either own an X-Box too or are planning to get one.
Anyway, yeah I think the Sony sales are very controversial.

Xbox has alot of problems in Japan, firstly the whole scratching issue that was never even a real issue. The fact Xbox was pulled from some store shelves for 2 days whould have been a huge blow to the publics reception of the machine.
other small things like the Official Japenesse Xbox magazine not having a playable demo disk would contribute to the bad attitude. Majority of western games like sport, FPSers and stuff would also be a factor, as well as the the machine size.
The light at the end of the tunnel seams to be Xbox Live, more impressive games Line up, those Xbox Phone booth thingys which are going to appear in High street shops, and that Xbox Store which is opening up allowing people to play new games and eat stuff for free. (thats cool but it would be VERY exployted if it came over here).

I'm pretty sure there are some figures being messed about. I read that DOA3 was the most advertised game ever in Japan, yet we still read there is praticlly 0 market penetration.
