So tomorrow is the 1yr anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks.
And I see endless lists of tv shows about it, documentaries, retrospectives, net sites etc etc.
And I’m sick of it.
Now before you start screaming about being heartless and callous and a Taliban sympathiser etc, listen to what I am saying.
I am sick of the coverage afforded, a year later still. There was an acceptance at the time that showing the footage of the planes hitting and the people jumping etc was near pornographic and was a distress.
And I agree with that.
Nobody is likely to forget the images from Sept 11th 2001, they are burned into our minds and retinas like a brand.
I certainly do not want to see an hour long program that does nothing except show me the footage, again, in slow motion of the planes hitting.
It’s even in the serious papers – The Sunday Times had a double-page image of the exact moment the second plane struck, complete with fireball and dramatic still-frame of the explosion. If you look real close, you can almost make out limbs.
And that’s what I object to. For thousands of people, those events are like yesterday to them. Do they need to see, once more, the video footage of the moment their loved ones died?
Why not, if you must mark the occasion, just talk to the survivors and relatives without those images?
To me, it cheapens the matter to just keep playing over and over and over the gruesome events of that morning.
Show some respect and ask the families how they would like to mark this private anniversary of having relatives killed.
Imagine you lost your mum or sister or whole family that day, and you know for a fact tomorrow that you are going to be able to witness, in glorious modern colour complete with computer aided graphics, exactly what happened when they were torn limb from limb.
Personally I find that notion abhorrent.
And as someone that lost a relative, I will not be watching any programs tomorrow that may afford me the chance to witness the death of somebody close.

It was just a pointless fantasy that maybe, just maybe the media would develop a conscience and people would stop being so ghoulish.

the media are a sensitive bunch. that is to say, sensitive to the wants of their target consumers.
Do you really think they would plaster pictures of the attacks everywhere if they didn't think that that was exactly what people wanted?
Put a picture of a plane slamming into a high rise and you can guarantee your paper's sales will rise.
Sure, some people find it insensitive, other find it offensive, but the vast majority will just eat it up. As they did Princess Diana, as they did Big Brother, as they did Holly and Jessica, as they did Foot and Mouth etc etc etc. For most of the world it's just something to read about, and so the papers and the little screen deliver.

I know that this is an issue that has been raised in America, and the families of the people killed have pleaded with the media not to bombard the September 11th with the already overseen footage.
They say 'lets remember the 11th, not re-live it'.

I'd agree with that, although I accept that the repeated showing of the footage is inevitable given the ghoulish nature of much of today's society.
Unlike you, I didn't lose anyone on that day, but even so I personally don't want to sit and watch all the footage again. There was an American guy on a news item earlier today who lost his Welsh wife, who was on the plane which hit the 2nd tower. He's had to watch that time and time again, and even has the 'priviledge' of being able to watch it on the internet in the unlikely event he wants to.
Whenever I see anything about it now, I find my eyes filling up again as I remember watching people throw themselves from the towers. I don't need to watch it again because it is an image that has burned itself onto my retinas.
I'm not a religious person at all, so I won't be saying any prayers for them, but I will be remembering them in my own way.

Last year I turned off the television after an hour or so.
Also I'm sickened at the amount of programs that will be on this year, all showing the same images.
To be brutally honest I'm curious to see the images again... just once... I know it sounds sick and I feel sick thinking about it but I think I'd want to see it just once more.

I totally see where you're coming from Goaty. TV stations are over-doing it. Yeah, it's a tragic event...but it's happened. The families see that image in their heads anyway, so why would they want it to be broadcasted, brining back maybe for some, forgotten memories.
