I forgot about this and watched a documentary last night about it, and it still rages me that this happens.

F.cking hell

We all think we live in a lovely western democracy but then you read stuff like that.

Who you complain to? The Police
Write to your MP? What'll he do... mention it and take years to do anything
Complain to people? Who's going to care? People only look out for themself after Thatcher year.

It annoys me and could easily happen to anyone it seems but we have no say

The UK introduced either this year or last. And Ithink it's only be used in one major case so far, which was against the organised crime supremo they got on a timeshare fraud charge. He lost his assets and the government is currently defending that decision I think.

Not sure though.

It does seem like a particularly pointless law.

I mean the only people whose assets you could legitmately seize (corruption issues aside) would be small fry drugs barons. Anyone with any real power wouldn't be so careless as to have lots of unnaccountable money and wealth lying about. It seems any serious drugs baron has a legitmate front to their business, and launders all revenue from the drugs as well. Leaving assets forfeiture pretty useless, as they can account for their money.

Jesus H Christ, I know you learn something new everyday but that's unbelievable! I've know about the US law enforcement agencies siezing assets of criminals (drug dealers etc) and then selling these so they can get better equipment for themselves, which I think is a good idea.

But the seizure of innocent people's assets is a disgrace and I hope this is stopped as soon as possible over here. I'm sure the press would have a field day with the government (labour, conservative or whoever is in power at the time) if they started doing that over here.

Glad my assets only amount to about £2.50 so they wont be after me, I hope!

Don't think i'd call it a perfect solution to anything. Not if it has the practical effect of revoking the right to a fair trial. For which we can all be greatful we live in the EU (European Convention on Human Rights.. hang on, we've partially withdrawn already...)

This warrants further investigation...

Thanks for the link, Goatboy.
