Been playing Mafia most of the weekend (when not out in Lundun being sociable).
And it's fantastic.

Imagine GTA3 in prohibition-era New York. And then some.
Car-jacking? Check.
Shooting bystanders? Check
Police chases? Check

Except the police-after-you is a lot more fun in this one. Commit a crime in a car and they come after you. If you can ditch the car without being seen, then they dont know what you look like and go screeching past you.
It's GTA3 with everything GTA3:Vice City is boasting about.
You can shoot tyres out to stop the cars. Oh, and shoot the gas tank if you want them to come to a coasting halt.
Or shoot at the radiator and explode the cars.

Loads of different little things make this game cool. Indoor missions (the hotel one is fantastic. Shoot a wh0re, a manager and loads of gangsters), racing missions in 1930 sports cars around a track, being ambushed on a rainy farm at night. Shooting out the back of a van with a Tommy Gun at the approaching cars.
Finding it hard? Either shoot out the tyres and watch the car go careening away or blast the driver. See the glass shatter, he slumps over the wheel and the car just blasts off the side of the road.

And with my Geoforce 4 64mb video card, there's zero slowdown with max detailing on.
Superb game, it really is. Voice acting is top-notch, environment's are stunning and it even has Django Reinhardt and Louis Prima on the soundtrack.
Free-ride to just cruise about and "Freeride Extreme" once you've completed the single-player game where you can unlock bizarre cars.

If you have a PC with a decent graphics card and liked GTA3, The Untouchables, Once Upon a Time in America etc then you really should get this game.
Once again,an Eastern European Developer does good (Max Payne, IL2-Sturmovik, Operation Flashpoint etc) by concentrating on seriously addictive gaming as opposed to massive advertising budgets on a shoddy game.
Support smaller companies that actually bother to make good games buy getting Mafia.

(time for the cliche summary sentence)
Or da family is gonna be disappointed in ya Tommy.
