The Matrix is still probably considered one of the best films ever made. All of those fancy but brilliant special effects and an interesting story line. But this film sparked off an incredible anount of games all trying to use the Matrix as a selling point.

The first game that I will bring up is Max Payne, as this is the game that probably started it all. When it came out for the PC, it won awards and was quoted as a stunning game, which it was without a doubt. But what was one of the main selling points, exactly, the 'Bullet Time' effect. It looked brilliant and made the game the much better, and just goes to show how the Matrix helped with the game. And, there were even mods that added the Matrix 'Lobby shootout', as a playable level, complete with a Max in black trenchcoat and shades, and the kung fu moves and running up walls.
Would Max Payne have been as good without the Bullet Time effect?

That is where it mainly started. Now, games are popping up everywhere that have incorporated the "matrix" effect. The latest one that I have seen is Need for Speed. It is really starting to get repetitive.
Even the producer of the Matrix himself, Joel Silver, has been quoted as calling the bullet time effect stone age compared to what they have accomplished in the new film, Matrix Reloaded. If this true, than the film ought to be as great as the first film.

But, with that in mind, this film with its new revolutionary special effects will no doubt have an impact on the games industry, with bucket loads of games coming out incorporating this special effects into them. In about two years time, this could be said about the next film.

It was good the first time round with Max payne, but has now become really old and annoying.

What do you think? Do you think that they should keep on using these effects, stop using them altogether, or just not as much?

So, they are saying that because these special effects cost so much and took so long, that nobody else will be willing to try them. Wow, they must be good then.

I like the Matrix Effect, or Bullet Time which is what I believe the developers of Max Payne where calling it. I like it when you can use it freely like in Max Payne, as you can choose how and when you want. What I don’t like is it being used in cut scenes.

Sure developers may think it makes a game look more spectacular, but to me it just looks stupid. Having a bullet Time cut scene is never going to look as good as a bullet time movie, it just looks like the developers are exploiting a popular craze (Being the Matrix in this case) even those games which don't suit bullet time.

It also looks a bit redundant after Max Payne’s release, that game showed it can be more fun and spectacular for gamers if they are in control of the matrix effect, instead of observing it in a naff looking cut scene.
