Sony has a device which contains broadband, analogue, and hard disc which fits into the back of the PS2. Like XBox, you can connect via various types of broadband using an appropriate lead. But the analogue 56k also means that you can use it on a normal analogue phone socket. This would be lots slower, but it might be good enough for slow moving games (SimCity, etc) and things like email and web access. There is no monthly charge using the Sony system.
So where does this leave us? In the UK, broadband is limited to just a few lucky area's. Anyone who claims otherwise has not seen the official BT broadband map. ADSL (broadband) has to be the main method of getting broadband in the UK since Cable networks cover very few area's. On the map, ADSL ON exchanges are marked green, while non-adsl is white. There are only pockets of green on the map, and it will be years before even half the UK gets it. So XBox Live will be a very limited product here, if they even release it in the UK. PS2 broadband will suffer the same. Only the analogue support on the PS2 will work everywhere - but this will not bring about the Online revolution because it's slow and unreliable. In the USA, it could be a different story - many area's get broadband along with their Cable tv network, which is a lot more popular then in the UK.
If they want to play MMOLRPG type titles (rather than the Quakes, UT type of gaming)
then they will need to have a HDD to store the game updates/patches/etc...
??? I dunno?
How much will that stick on top of the price of a PS2?

I don't like 56k modems any more than you. Death to all modems, etc. BUT, I have seen the BT Broadband map which shows the area's that can get ADSL (broadband via a phone line). These ADSL ON area's are few and far - mos**t of the UK can not get this service. And the amount of upgrades required (even without cos**t issues) to get the entire UK on ADSL will take years. This is why, a little while back BT said that some parts (upto 30%) may never get broadband. So for mos**t people, broadband is not possible. Some very lucky people can get broadband along with Cable tv - but this is a long way from common place in the UK - even less i expect than ADSL. Which brings us back to 56k modems - which as we agree are sh*t. You might get away with a few emails and a bit of web access - but not the big s**tuff. So we are back to what we have, disc games. This means that any proposed broadband game sys**tem from Sony, MS, or Ninty is going to have a very difficult time in the UK.

Especially considering only about 20% of XBOX users have it. Way to go, MS!

Having people to play against is better. There will be many more PS2 online users than XBOX ones for sure, when you see how many more units they have shifted and how many network adapters they have sold in Japan and America compared to Microsoft.

By the way, there ARE games that have broadband specific options, or some games that are broadband only (like SOCOM).
So try not to be an idiot next time you post.

Microsoft have done well with their Broadband (BB) only rule.
When playing slow games like Red Alert 2 (PC) they have added a feature so that everybody has the same delay, it's hard trying to select a fast moving vehicle but it's good as the ping doesn't really affect you.
FPS games on a modem are crap and they just slow down the game for everyone else, keeping modems away is better.
Basically, the Xbox Live service will slaughter the PS2 in terms of quality! Once you get BB you will have a good service to play on without any modems to slow you down!
Modems are evil...
Speaking of online..........anybody want to play Unreal Tournament?
