Ok, so perhaps this is better in the sport forum, but they're all big hairy rugby players in there ;-)

Well, to cut a long story shorter than the tail on a Manx cat, I took my first belt test in Taekwondo today and passed. Pretty intense testing, but strangly fun at the same time.

It feels so good to have an orange belt now. Yeah, I know some of you already have higher belts in this or other martial arts, but I don't care, I just feel good that I got this one and I'm on the long road (4 years) to getting a Black Belt.

Then when he has the wallet and turns away you crush his throat from behind. Problem solved.

I come from the "Whatever you say, I just don't want a fight because we're not 12" school of combat.

Failing that, pick up the nearest big thing and use as a melee weapon before exiting at great speed.

Hardly. In my time I've been proficient in Karate, Judo, Ngo Cho and boxing. And anyway, Tae Kwon Do is comparable to Wu Shu in it's over-extravagance. For self-defence it's not great, unless looking pretty can save you.

Jujitsu, the more violent cousin of Judo, is an excellent martial art, although the actual techniques used in the original form are greatly toned down these days (they don't teach as many ways to snap someone's neck any more...).

Personally, I'm from the Jet Li school of fighting philosophy, and don't recommend martial arts as a form of self defence at all.

Jet Li is quoted as saying:
"If someone puts a knife to my throat and says 'give me your wallet' I will say 'here, take my wallet'. There is no point getting injured or killed trying to be a hero when you don't need to be"

Wide words.

Tae Kwon Do is crap. I could fight better without the training, you don't even get taught leg sweeps, thats pathetic.

I'm with the TAGB so I've got the traditional Yellow Belt (with a green stripe) and I'm doing the 3 step patterns.

I should reach Green belt within the next few weeks.

I don't know which Martial Art most of you chose, but I don't see why you're dissing Tae Kwon Do. Instead of having the wierd paralyzing moves you lot were on about, it simply goes for the no-nonsense focusing your strength and power in the most effective way.

It took the best from Karate and used modern medical knowledge to improve it, allowing it to use the human body to maximum effect.

Martial Arts are a great way to keep fit and also are useful come the time when you need to defend yourself. If you want to start to learn one, I would recommend looking at the different styles of Martial Arts that are available in your area.
Oh and whoever said that Tae Kwon Do is a Martial Arts for wusses is in for a surprise if he spars with one. Every martial art has numerous useful and strong techniques which can stun, paralyze or even kill if executed correctly, I often exchange moves and techniques with friends which practice different styles making my fighting style well rounded and able to deal with more situations. I do Jujitsu, which has kept me extremly fit and strong, it also allows me to defend myself without having to actually attack somebody (very useful for school situations).

Finally Martial Arts are the strongest, fastest and most effective forms of (legal) Self-Defense which I highly recommend to anyone.
