Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on Kazaa. I'm thinking of registering with it but have heard about spyware and stuff like that.

I'm on a broadband connection, but I do have a firewall program.

Is it safe, and has anyone had any bad experiences with it? (I mean REALLY bad).

Can you get the filetypes? It may be getting OGG files, or something else Winamp can't (or couldn't) play. A trip to Winamp.com for a new version of the player and codecs is in order, I think.

For some stupidly gay reason I can't play the songs I download of there on my winamp so I have to use even gay'er Windows Media Player. Thing is it saves them as winamp files but refuses to play them. Gay, gay, gay.

It's probably something simple but tell me how to make it work you oh so clever people, ta. :)

After finding AdAware on the internet (www.download.com if you're interested) I discovered the ShareWare that comes with KaZaA. Firstly is a Gator setup that roots itself in your Kazaa directory, WINDOWS and SYSTEM. Adaware finds the files for you (I had about 30 Gator files in all) and deletes them.
Then there's another one called Brilliant Digital, I'm not sure if that came through KaZaA but I guess it must have done because theres no other way it could have got onto my pc. I'd never notcied it before because it's hidden away deep in your SYSTEM and WINDOWS.
There were also some others in my registry only I haven't touched them yet because the last time I touched my registry the PC got screwed, big-time. A good way to check if you've got SpyWare or no is to check the date the suspicious files were created and then see if they were not on a time before you bought the PC or installed new (eligable, not warez) software.

All in all after my first sweep AdAware found around 88 spyware files and now I'm clean. It really speeds up the PC too. It's also a good idea to remove the 'Promotions' file in your KaZaA directory too, as that contains pointless ad files.

Whatever you do though, DON'T touch the 'dB' file in your KaZaA directory as that's vital to KaZaA - it contains all the names and details of all your mp3s/warez.

Spyware is software which installs on your PC and pops up little adverts every so often.
