...thanks to Reaper ;)
it's funny how you say "Real work" I love it when people say that.
you don't have to use it 100% to get the effects from it, faster CPU gets the job done faster, thats all you need to know, if your using it to 100% you should probably get a faster CPU, you must be doing quite a lot of stuff to be using the whole processor up!
The thing is, real computer users are usually processing large amounts of graphics in the GIMP/Photoshop, compiling videos, displaying complicated graphics etc. Real Linux users spend half their lives waiting for new and extremely useful software to install - either using Windows-style precom binaries or compiling their own - maybe even compiling their own software, as me, Luke and Richard have done many times.
Whereas Joe Public launches Word 2000.

harsh, but hey....

poor robby wobby

such as??

I agree totally here. my PIIIe Celeron 900Mhz is more than enough for me, though I could do with more than 128Mb RAM for Windows XP....
I'm not being funny here, I hate the way people buy a new computer with the latest gear, and all they *ever* do is surf the web and maybe play a little Half-Life. I bet your processor has never hit 100% load for more than 5 seconds once, unless you're running Seti or UD.
And then you get people like me, Luke, Richard (Shaw), Phil, who really need fast processors to get actual real stuff done fast.
I've got nothing against people who want the best, but companies making people think they want these chips is sickening.
It's a slow process though. We were going to be charged £100 to get our lost data back, it wasn't even our fault, they put a faulty moherboard in, we complained they took it back and wiped our hdd. they've gone bankrupt now though.
"Choosing to 'Open with....' 27 items at once may take a long time and cause your computer to respond slowly. Do you wish to continue?"
Clearly the number doesn't matter, but I know for a fact my computer can't handle 27. Last time this happened I was trying to load 27 files into one program, so I said OK. The computer crashed so I restarted it. When I did, the HDD was messed up since it had dumped bad data on the disk - and it cost me £40 to have recovered. It could have been a lot worse though...
A 300Mhz PC would do most things a 1.8Ghz PC would do (except for many games) but it would do it a lot slower.
If your in a rush to get out and need to load a document and print it off a fast computer could load anything up ...etc better than a smaller PC.
Faster processors are good for me as i've always got a few heavy programs open, sometimes a music program and raw Audio doesn't like a slow PC.
i do web development on my pc (programming rather than graphical) so my 8 month old Intel Pentium III Celeron 900Mhz is quite sufficient.
if you want to play games and intensive things like that, then yes, a more powerful PC would be required. If i was going to host sites on my pc (i.e. not just for development) then I would buy a new PC with more RAM and a faster processor.
