And by the way by reasons for this is that I think the N64 version has better controls.
But it would have been much better if the backgrounds were all as detailed as the better ones, i mean the samus one was good but then ones like peachs castle are not detailed enough.
Also the trophies they are so annoying it would be ok if there were only a few and it actually told you how to get them but the idea of just putting coins into a machine and hope gets me really annoyed.
I recently powered up the original on my N64 and though I wasn't too impressed with the graphics, the gameplay was excellent. I then went back on SSBM and was once again blown away.
SSBM beats SSB in all areas - you're fighting a losing battle.
I wasn't used to the GC pad (it was the first time I'd played on my Gamecube), the new game was much faster and seemed far less "controlled" than it's predeccessor.
Within a couple of days, I'd gotten used to the faster speed and the Gamecube controller and managed to focus in every way that Melee out does it's predecessor:
Faster, smoother, more moves, more characters, more interesting stages, more weapons, new ideas, more frantic, and far more options and ways of playing.
While the original Smash Brothers was great, Hal has taken it's best bits and made them a lot better, so naturally Melee will be superior.
Charged Smash attacks, Smash B moves, 4 directional throws, moving levels (like the second F-Zero track), wall jumping, using a gappling hook/beam to climb onto the levels...
etc.
If I could only have one or the other, it would most definately be the GameCube game.
SSBM makes SSB on the 64 look like poo.
It wasn't poo, but in comparison, it is.
The graphics are better, the gameplay is better, the sound is better, the one player is significantly better, the multiplayer is unbeatable.
nuff said.
