Well, you’d be surprised at the number of people who buy music because the band is considered ‘cool’ by their peers. It’s not surprising considering that the media, including the main music press, seem to dump last year’s heroes as soon as they step out of line. It’s only through sheer hard work, a large fanbase who will not die and, sometimes, sheer luck that they survive at all.
Many bands don’t really deserve the time they’re given anyway, but there are those that do and have just been unlucky with the press and fans turning against them have to spend the rest of their lives hearing the laughter as people talk about them as a joke. These same people were the fans that bought all their records when they were cool, they spent their money on the t-shirts, the concerts and the merchandise. Now they turn their attention to the next big thing and their old band is yesterday’s news.
It’s the same in the film industry, look at all the actors who have had success and critical acclaim, then find themselves out of favour with Hollywood and the public. Sometimes it’s that the actors have been unlucky in a bad film, denting their reputation, other times it’s just that they took a break from acting and then found themselves out of sync with the film industry.
Of course, if a band is suddenly considered uncool, then it can only rely on a fanbase who will continue supporting it, otherwise it will crumble and become just a small sideline in the history of music. The bands have a choice, either they can cater to the market, and effectively ‘sell-out’ or they can make the music that they want to, unaffected by what people want, and take the risk of losing sales. One such band are Pearl Jam, who, after their initial success, decided that they wanted to continue making the music they wanted when everyone else was expecting another album similar to Ten. Their second album had a harsher sound, something that many original fans couldn’t really cope with, but they continued to make music the way they wanted and sales suffered. But, Pearl Jam were lucky, they had a large fan base who liked what they were doing and their attitude to music, so they continue to make albums and sell enough to make their record company happy, other bands aren’t so lucky.
So think before you buy that next album and throw away your t-shirt, why exactly are you changing alliances and do you really want to support a band that caters for the market first whie throwing away its independence to make the music it really wants to, or are you being pressed into liking a band because all your mates do?
I like the way I have got into the music I like.
I started off being your normal boy, just listened to what was on the radio when i was young and buy a CD once in a while. Didn't really buy many CD's when I was younger, I was really into music once then went out of it.
When I came back into music it was when my friend showed me what he was currently liking. The band were Blink 182 and I was impressed with their album 'Enema Of The State'. So, having jsut got the internet I went and downloaded some of their stuff along with other bands such as Limp Bizkit etc. I actually listened to this stuff when I was younger as I did like it and not because it was cool, that is probably quite rare now.
I hate the stuff now though, mainly because those songs were the foundations of my love for rock music. I had to start somewhere and that was it. Games like Tony Hawks also made me love it more, rock was the new sound.
So I started downloading songs from the internet which other people had told me to get and listen to. Soon after I started doing what my friend was doing, he was going on the internet finding new bands I had never heard of and buying their CD's after if he liked them. So one day, bored, I went and done just that. I had played Dave Mirra BMX game a while before and noticed a song I liked called 'Be Quiet & Drive' by the Deftones. So I got that and when my best mate come round he said that he had their CD but hadn't actually listened to them much. He actually had all 3 of their CD's but didn't seem to listen to them and judged them as not very good for a while.
But then when he listened he loved them, so did I. We got all of their songs and became a pair of fans. Saw them in Camden at a concert and it was excellent.
I really do thank that band for everything. They were the first band I truly got into, which I would listened to non-stop for ages and never get bored. Really a big inspiration on me and my friend, we started making our own music with him playing guitar and me writing singing. Something I actually enjoyed doing because I was inspired.
The bigger inspiration though really came from a band called Far. I found them through the Deftones and many other bands that way. Far really impressed me from the start and on everything I done musically. I really admired the frontmans talent, he could paly guitar and also sing really great. I later found out he was in his own solo project and in a new band called New End Original. Far had spilt up.
Didn't really effect me, I loved the music Far done, downloaded it all, bought the CD's and loved their style. They were a kind of emo-rock. In some cases more heavy and in other much softer. But I liked it all. That is now why I like both Hardcore songs and the more Emo songs.
I never liked Fra because they were 'cool', everyone I told them about called them rubbish because they had never heard of them. I didn't listen, I just kept listening. Once theytook the time to listen they liked.
So I see Far and the Deftones as bands which really influenced me. I thank them for what I listen to today and the bands I like most are actually not around anymore, which is a shame, but still I like to listen to them.
Inspiration in music is special, it's made me want to do the same as what I listen to and since I have a full band which is currently going ok. Bound to get better though.
Our drummer is someone who likes all that pop-punk stuff and has stacks of CD's which looks as though he just picked them up without knowing what they are. Thing is, all the songs seem very un-original and though I like some I don't like the majority. All these songs have influenced him though too, take this convosation for example:
ME: So what should our band be called?
Him : Not sure.
ME: Could be one word, two or three, maybe more.
Him: Or maybe a word and a number?
He then went on to write a song about a girlfriend and posters or something and not wanting his girlfriend to see them or soemthing. Hmmmm
Bands don't influence me name wise but in the writing a bit.
Have I strayed off subject? :-S
