Very true.

Oh trollocks! The USA was officially (sp?) at war with Japan so they had every right to drop the bomb, what about all the atrocious handling of prisoners the Japanese captured? Or the fact that Pearl Habour was bombed without warning. All I'm saying is that the civilians were casulties of war, the US would only have done conventional bombing otherwise which may well have killed more. On both sides.

And the Trade Center attacks, well it was not in the bounds of war it was just an act of murder. Of course you could argue that legitimacy is in the eyes of the beholder. Personally I think the use of the bomb in WWII was to end the war faster and save lives but it would be possibly true to argue that the US wanted to drop it to test in a real war. And possibly to impress/scare the USSR.

Well not really. You have a valid point, who is to say what is right and wrong? History is written by the victors, and since the concept of right and wrong is a human notion then whoever wins must be right (a bit like survival or the fittest).

Either way, the cockroaches win.

Start a war and if you win, you were a freedom fighter, revolutioary or something good, if you lose you were filthymurderous scum.

Take america slaughtering thousands of japanese in hiroshima and nagasaki, people overlook the civilian casualties partly because it was 'our' side that did it, and because it was instrumental in the course of te war.

Wheras when al quaeda (sp?) slaughter thousands of americans, it's a tragedy because it's not our side and not for our cause.

Putting aside the larger context of what everyone's fighting for, and timing within the conflic, they're both just people waging war for what they believe in.

I don't support or condone either side's actions.

And i have a feeling this might not go down so well...

Well your History teacher can go to hell, and he can die. Well, I suppose he'd say that if Hitler existed, there wouldn't be heaven or hell. A good argument, I suppose :)

Counter-factual history is good.

We would probably be speaking German, and most of the world would be either part of the Japanese or German empire.
And a 'cold war would most likely break out between Germany and the US.
The USA would lose out on most trade and would be nowhere near as powerful as it is today.
Germany may have been the first nation to send a man to the moon.
Then a nuclear war would most likely break out between Japan-Italy-Germany and the USA.
Everyone would die, including most animals...except the cockroaches, who would go on to evolve and dominate the world as a new, ultimate species.
With acid spores.
And spines.

Well, some of us would never have been born, that's for sure. Why, you ask? Because our parents would not likely have ever met, being that the public would've probably been moved around the country, stuck in camps, moved abroad, that sort of thing. Or even wiped out, like they wanted to do with the Russians (so Germany could move in)

Nasty thoughts

I don't really think it'd be that different, except that half the world would look at America with contempt, since they could have saved it if they'd joined earlier...
