I think the 3D version looks quite good in the screenshots. It's a matter of personal preference I suppose.

I doubt I'd be playing the Sims Online any time soon as we don't jave broadband here yet so it would cost too much to play online.
EA have already stated that they don't want to change the formula of the game too much as it could jeopardise future sale, which is one of the reasons why Simville was cancelled.
Aside from it's graphics engine, 2-player mode and a few other extras, I suspect the PS2 Sims will just the same as the PC Sims. Now, the Sims online is looking very good indeed, and that's probably one of the only Sims games I'm looking forward to play. It should hopefully make up for the boredom you can get from all other Sims games at the moment.
I am interested in the new PS2 version coming out soon though. There'll be levels setting out different tasks and such giving the game a bit of direction as well as the standard form of freeplay. The whole thing is in #D apparently too which should look nice.
Anyway, I do agree that the game does get incredibly boring pretty soon on, and it certainly doesn't appeal to me as much as games which provided players a suitable challange to complete. I don't hold the game as a classic, nor do I look forward to yet more generic add-on packs which add little to the games structure.
I think EA need to go to the next level with the sims, and from what I saw and read, simsville looked like that's what the company was doing. I think it was a bad move from EA to can that game, especially since there will be a time when fans of the sims will start to crave more from the series than just another expansion disc with a few extras thrown in.

i agree with you, there is a new sims expansion (ive heard) called the sims unleashed which has pets like dogs and cats but i got told that by a friend. but on holiday and hot date were just new house building lots, which isnt very interesting and the odd thing you cant get on the orriganal set of lots. the downloads from the sims website are just wot is on the expansion which is pointless in a way.
The first is they are afraid that if they change the basic formula of the game too much, there could be a chance that fans of the series won't like it much, and that would jeopardise future sales. That’s the reason the company canned the very promising looking simsville.
The second reason is that the Sims franchise is probably one of the biggest grossing games series for many years; the game and its expansions have sold millions worldwide. By producing more add-on packs, the company sells more products and makes a ton load of more money. Die hard fans of the series will buy all add-on packs regardless of how little they add to the actual game, so why should EA not exploit this.
I would like to see allot added to the Sims, mainly some objectives so the game doesn't become as boring as it does. I doubt this will ever happen though, so instead I leave all future Sims purchases and downloads to my sister, who loves the game.
