If its any consolation I've gone one better than that...
Had a duff PC gamepad (Gravis Gamepad Pro - never buy one, nastiest pieceof junk pad there is) that I had to keep fixing in order to have it working for games. Was playing on the comp one night when it decided that from now on it would always be pressing left, and promptly made my character start doing pirouettes, so I fumble around for a screwdriver but can't find one. all I could find was a penknife, didn't have a driver head on it, so I used the tip of the blade (anyone see where this is going yet? ;) )...
Basically I put too much pressure on the hilt, and the blade folded back into the handle. Painful part? My right forefinger was between the blade and the handle. ;)
The blade cut right down, through all the ligaments and stopped at the knuckle bone, hurt like a mofo and was pouring with blood. It didn't actually need stitching, I just quickly got some of those weird plasters they use for closing wounds, stuck the thing shut as tightly as I could then bandaged the finger to keep it secure and the wound started healing properly after about a day. That whole bit where it's healed at the base of the wound so you aren't bleeding, but the rest of the gash is still open, is a real nasty sight. Still have the scar to remind me. ;)
So the moral of this story for those of you that haven't lost your breakfast, and Hex... provided you securely close the wound with a dry dressing, you should be alright, you won't need stitching or anything although I concur with the sentiment that your mother was entirely selfish.
