My PS1 never got chipped or any thing and it messed up in 5 years, i now have a new one which i hardly use. Maybe due to the increase of power the machines life has declinded to 1 and 1/2 years, or what ever you said, lets just think what the Xbox life span is.
As for the chips to play imports then yes that deffinatly wrecks the console my mates had 3 PS1 due to the chip ruining it, and i cant see it not doing any harm to the PS2.
