"Xbox is rubbish because it's too big!"
"No, the Gamcube sucks because its games for 3 year olds."
"Nope, your both wrong the PS2 is pants because it's games are boring!"
How many times have we seen this? In today’s gaming world people are coming up with stupid reasons to dislike other consoles. In actual fact none of there consoles ‘suck’, they are all good in there own fields. This kind of talk will never change, it just the way it has become now. There is a way in which all these people can join together and play the same sorts of games. I'm taking about retro gaming, not the old games being re-released on the next-generation consoles, but actually reliving the fun days of gaming.
That’s one thing that worries me a little bit in the way that gaming is heading, I feel its all trying to be too life like. When we switch on our desired console we want to escape from the realities of life and head into a world of fun. If you look around the games market today it will amaze you to see how incredibly beautiful some of the graphics are. This is excellent don't get me wrong; I think its great how we are playing great games graphic wise. I'm starting to worry about this though, people are expecting games to be great in the graphical department which is fine because that’s the way gaming seems to be heading. However I feel they may concentrate too much on the graphical side of the game and not the game play.
When the NES was released it didn't have great graphics that made you drawl with envy. The games had a lot of fun in them, they needed to otherwise people would just look and laugh. The games developers concentrated on the gameplay to insure great gaming. Well today it seems like a competition to produce games with outstanding graphical features in. I love my games to have a lot of fun in, I really wouldn’t mind if the graphics weren’t all that stunning, it’s more important to spend time on the gameplay in my opinion.
I feel the gaming scene is heading in the way of brilliant graphics and good gameplay (notice ‘good’ not excellent). I like many others will still buy the games and have a great time but I intend to go back to the NES and other retro consoles to relive the extreme amount of fun packed inside the little carts. If the games are packed full of graphical stunning visuals then I can’t really complain because after all people have spent months making these games.
Final fantasy X is one of the most advanced games in the graphical area, it really does show what the PS2 is capable of and shows other consoles how to make games. Even with all the phenomenal visuals I still feel that it isn’t as good as Final Fantasy 7. Final Fantasy 7 wasn’t the most graphically advanced game around when it was first released although it was quite stunning, it didn’t need all the graphics to secure a great sales record, it had a tremendous amount of fun in it! There are lots of others games like FF7 that didn’t need outstanding graphics to make them sell.
I think we should all remember where the gaming started to reach extreme levels of fun and relive those moments. When we play our next-gen consoles we should also give a retro console a home on the shelf too. When you’re stuck on a hard game just sit back and shoot some ducks or collect some coins with the little blue dude.
Thanks for reading :)

Personally I think without graphical improvements the gameplay would not improve. It's all very well people saying that old classics have good gameplay, but when they go back to playing an old game I think they will find the gameplay is just as dated as the graphics. Me thinks.

A great example of what I'm talking about. See?
Super Moneky Ball - lush, yet unrealistic graphics...making it in my eyes graphically perfect.
:)
I see what you mean about the fun in gaming dieing, and I do still remember how much more fun it all used to be when it was all a lot simpler.
We see some complex games and they work great - like Zelda.
But there are one or two others that go wrong.
When you think about it, RPG's or maybe FPS's are currently the most-preffered style of game today. I think this is all down to how well you are envloved in the game, making it a lot easier for you to understand, giving you access to lots of fun.
When games were simpler they were all the same, and no-one could really have a strong case to argue that "The MegaDrive's better than the SNES" - or anything similar. But now that's all changing, anf the competition is increasing as the games become more complex and 'better' than others.
I've gone back to my SNES for the Mario games and I love it! :D
Good post too. :)

Just because the style of games has improved, it doesn't mean that fun of the games has.
Time Crisis has more things going on, prettier graphics, PEOPLE to shoot, cool death animations...
Duck Hunt has some fugly sprites to aim your gun at.
I played Duck Hunt to death when I was a kid and I'd prefer Time Crisis anyway.
