Well done for the research as I know from it neither of you know that Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Captain Benjamin Sisko and Captain Kathryn Janeway also encountered the furies throughout the four book collection :)
The TOS novel, FIRST STRIKE (Diane Carey) introduces us to the Furies and their situation. Carey does a great job of establishing (and carefully revealing) their history. The Furies look like the various demons and devils that Federation races have in their ancient pasts. It turns out that those demons did exist, and the Furies were them. Carey takes the opportunity to muse about such things as the necessity of limbs and at least two eyes in order to become a space faring society -- explaining why practically everyone in the STAR TREK universe is a biped, about 6 feet fall. Hortas, smart as they are, have no industry.
Along with the Furies, Kirk must contend with Kellen, a Klingon General, who finds that Kirk is not living up to his own legend. When Kirk asks, "Recommendations, Mr. Spock?" Kellen snorts, "The great shipmaster asks for recommendations. The cavalier of Starfleet asks of his subordinates what to do." Earlier, Kellen had put it more succinctly: "I am disappointed in you, Kirk. You do not deserve to be Kirk." With a little action, a little philosophy, and a little fast thinking, FIRST STRIKE accurately captures the original television show experience.
*sniggers*
