Good question. There are two theories as to the origin of the word 'spam'. The first is that it originates from the Monty Python song 'Spam Spam Spam Spam' where the word is repeated incessantly, the other theory states that a journalist once described the phenomenon of multiple unsolicited emails and multiple posting as akin to throwing a can of Spam into a fan.

Most people go with the first theory, although others say that the second theory predates the Monty Python song by 10 years.

Hornel's tin of Spam (spiced ham) predates everything.

If anyone knows the definitive answer I'd like to see it.

Why is it called "spam"?

I think the main reason was because they posted spam. Ya know, useless topics. Some of them were only 1 or 2 lines long and not worth reading. Ah well. Heh...
