If anything's really helped his career to flurish and help him to reach his full-potential as a recognised Brazillian 'Superstar' then it has to have been from that day when he signed on the dotted line at the Nou Camp for Spanish giants Barcelona. Everything he's achieved since then - and not just at club level - has really helped him to become worthy of the millions of pounds he has been earning on an annual basis.
But now his time in Spain has come to an end - well, at Barcelona anyway.
Has he joined Newcastle for £20m??? Or is it Lazio for a Serie A record breaking 40???? No, and no to even the likes of Manchester United.
The man who makes the millions has been RELEASED from his contract with Barcelona for FREE - apparently due to Mutual Consent.
My first reaction to this is that Barcelona have gone mad - and I bet you were somewhere along the same lines too!
But when you stop and think about the Financial Crisis that has hit Italian Football and is slowly sailing over to Spain, and contextualise that with the number of 0's you see in Rivaldo's Bank Account, you can see that this suicidal move HAS been thought about and that many options - if not all - have been thoroughly considered.
"If it's all down to money then why didn't they sell him!??"
I hear you cry.
"They could fetch-in a good 40-50 million if not more!"
Is added to your cries of dis-belief.
It's all true, and there ARE reasonable explanations.
The transfer of a player of Rivaldo's calibur could take quite some time to complete. No, of course there would be interest in him, but sifting through the good parts and the bad parts to get the best deal would be the hardest part. And in that time of multiple-negotiations, he'd still be a player contrcated to the club, and therefore he'd still be recieving his wages - and that wouldn't help the club one bit for a player on something as rediculous as £100k per week!
And anyway, many of the big-names would barely be able to afford the transfer fee ALONE with the financial problems currently on-going elsewhere.
Man United would be a safe bet, but they just aren't interested in the 30 year old anymore. With Italy out of the question that's one mass-market of potential buyers out of the question.
The only club remaining are Newcastle! And Sir Bobby Robson isn't the type of man who'll rashly spend so much in one move - even if the one player you'd recieve could do so much!
So it looks like this 30-year old World Cup Cheater is stuck in a rut that he may not be able to get out of anytime soon. And even if he does survive, would he really be happy spending nights at home infront of a heater in a town like Newcastle??
He may have to take what's best for the remaining years of his career - even if he doesn't like it!
So then, what is best for him???
Newcastle have been on-his-tail for a good few years now and this is probabyl going to be the best chance the club will ever have of landing a World Cup superstar! Even if they loose a lot financially, they could have got a lot back come this time next summer!
There's nothing wrong with playing in the Premiership either. You're in amongst the best in possibly the greatest league in the world!
And to add to that there's the FA Cup, League Cup, the chance to play at Old Trafford and the Cardiff Millennium Stadium, and you'd be guarrenteed 2 fixtures against Man United - the team everyone loves to hate!
Unless of course you're PLAYING at Old Trafford on a regular basis.
But they've said no, and so to have Leeds.
Everyone else seems happy with their attack in the Premiership, and it's not like even United would be tempted to give him £100k-a-week after the £30m capture of Rio Ferdinand and his £70k weekly charges.
Germany, Scotland, or maybe a return to Brazil may be the only other options to the Brazillian due to 'Money Issues' and so-on.
But I still don't think he'd be happy like a Barcelona player there either.
Germany would simply be too rough for him, with too-much of 'The Passing Game', which would lead him to cheat again and try to do things like a one-man team.
Scotland would just be too easy for him - like it is for many great players, and it's not like he'd helped the money problems there either.
He could retutn home to Spain, but there'd be too much demand for him and you never know what problems might come if he was at Real Madrid away to Barcelona! And Spannish clubs seem to spend enough anyway!
So the door to the Premiership could be open to this well-known 30-year old - if he is prepared to put-up-with the 'different' lifestyle of chilly Geordie Land just to play amongst the very best.
Aside from that, it seems that the paths to where he may want to go have all been closed or blocked off. It's an awkward situation for such a talented aeging footballer.
Put yourself in Rivaldo's shoes.... would you agree to join Newcastle and accept a massive wage-cut to do so????
Knowing the modern-day footallers, i'm not so sure he would!
The city is proper wicked.
I doubt he will have anything as bad as that in his time at Milan.
So he'll soon be playing with the likes of Schevchenko, Pirlo and Tomasson, against the likes of Ronaldo and Vieri in the big Milan Derbys!
I still don't see how AC Milan can still afford such high wages for him, with the current money crisis over there?
He should be able to take Rivaldo's role no problemo!
Providing they can afford him of course....
> Uh huh, proper looking forward to seeing Riquelme playing in Europe

> Oh, and has that loan deal for Mendieta to Barca been done?
saviola kluivert is nlikely to be thier front two
Lazio have been after Rivaldo for a good few years now, and have apparently come pretty close to signing him on one or two occasions.
Barcelona would never have sold him for money reasons, and there has been some kind-of 'dis-agreement' between the player and Van Gaal which probably helped to fuel the termination of Rivaldo's contract.
I read something earlier that said Rivaldo believes it's all down to jealousy - Rivaldo won the World Cup where-as the Van Gaal's country Holland didn't even qualify!
I don't reckon that'd be the main reason, and I don't really see why a manager would be jealous of his player. Surely it'd be the other players who were green with envy!?
Either way, Rivaldo thinks too highly of himself!
With his outrageous wage-demands that're damaging football as a whole and his ego after lifting the trophy while getting away with 'murder' in the World Cup. Or 'cheating' if you will...
Obviously, money is the real problem here that's stopping the big clubs from signing him. Surely after years of luxury at the Nou Camp he can stand-up and take a big cut from now on!
He'd be setting a true example to others, and that may help fans to get over those 'incidents' in the World Cup and maybe even RESPECT him now!
