As gamers we really are being spoilt with beautiful graphics, great gameplay and many other elements that make our gaming experience phenomenal. We have got a wide range of consoles to chose from, with each console housing games that make you very poor indeed. But still with a wide range of consoles and games to feed your gaming habit we still hear people moaning about bad games. Sure if a game is suppose to be really good then you play it and find out its pants then maybe that deserves a bit of abuse. Saying that the game may not be to your taste, that is why we have a wide range of games to choose from.

Often Have I walked into a games shop and heard people saying things such as ‘don’t get that game it is only 10 hours long’ or ‘Look at the childish graphics, I bet it is easy’. Comments like that really annoy me and I don’t see the need for people to put down games due to there relatively short lifespan. To have the greatest gaming experience you need quality not always quantity in your games. Great games such as Pikmin have been brushed away from people’s gaming experience due to their desire for long lasting games. Sure we all want our moneys worth and obviously do not want to play a game once then never again.

Every game is packed full of goodness but sometimes it takes you to enjoy the game not for the game to entertain you. People expect a game to just entertain you with you the gamer not doing very much at all. This is a fair expectation but it doesn't always work with every game. If a game only has a certain lifespan you have to squeeze every last drip of enjoyment out of it if you want your money to be spent well. People often complain about games being too short and not a lot of things too accomplish, on very rare occasions this is true, but sometimes people are just too lazy.

Playing a game is not as easy as non-gamers think; it isn't a case of run to the end of the level and shoot a rocket up an enemies butt. No, there is a lot more to do than that. Sometimes the graphics of a game just make you think about all the work that went into the game or sometimes the story line grabs your mind and you feel like you really are part of the game. The game, which you are playing, could be the hardest task you have faced in your life, but people often disclose it as a sad and boring hobby playing games. None of us play games all the time, we are also very normal people and enjoy the same things as the non-gamers. When they watch movies all the time no one says anything, but people just think that gaming is easy and any old Tom Dick Or Harry could play a video game.

The launch on the Nintendo Gamecube was a great success but still I hear people (ps2 owners) saying that games are childish and look really easy. Is this true? No, I really can't imagine any five or six year-old children getting past all the levels on Super Monkey Ball. Just because the graphics may seem cartoony it doesn't mean the game is easy. I personally think the graphics on most of the Nintendo games are great, they make my gaming experience fun and not boring. Well that's what us gamers want, the fun!

Even though there are a lot of people who still think the Gamecube has childish games, it has been a great hit worldwide. As a planet we are spoilt for choice of games, there is always some games people are not going to like but there is not liking a game and ‘not liking’ a game. If the gamer just feels the game doesn’t really suit there gaming genre that they love then that is fine but what really annoys me is when people dislike games due to their ‘childish’ appearance. Some people think they are really ‘hard’ because they’ve got a copy of GTA3; some of them even laugh at the thought of getting a game that doesn’t have any violence or blood in.

Games such as Crash bandicoot and Jak and Daxter are great, they bring some fun into out gaming experience which takes us away from the life-like graphics of games such as Final Fantasy X. Don’t get me wrong I love games which are very life-like but I also love the good old cartoon graphics which have an element of fun which is sometimes left out of the life-like games. Will some people ever learn to give a game a chance if it has cell-shaded or ‘childish’ graphics? ~ I very much doubt it, but I wish they would as they are missing out on great games. If the length of the games puts you off then rent it, at least this way you will still get to play the game rather than totally missing out on pure fun. Long live fun games :)

Thanks for reading :)

If only some gamers looked beyond the 'childish' graphics and into the beauty of the game, I'm sure there views on 'childish' games would change then :)

There are hundreds and hundreds of games available on the shelves at the moment. Ranging from Nazified Zombie-blasting to big ape barrel-bashing that all provides us with entertainment.

Some gamers just think of games as movies that you can play. That's a stupid way to look at gaming. You should be controlling the action, not watching it!

As you said, gamers seem to judge games on their graphics. So what if the characters are cute and cuddly? After all, Pac-man (originally Puck-man) is a yellow hockey-puck with a section missing eating dots whilst cute and un-scary ghosts chase him. So why is it Pac-man is recognised all over the world and others not? If I mentioned General Shepard and Kane, characters from a popular videogames series, chances are, you wont know who they are or what they're from. They're actually from the Command & Conquer series - a game series considered more 'adult' because the graphics aren't cute and the objective of the game is to KILL KILL KILL.

"Don't buy the GameCube, the graphics are s**t!"
"Super Mario? That's for babies!"
"Pokémon is rubbish. It went out of fashion ages ago and Pikachu is a stupid yellow freak!"

Those sound familiar to you? That's right, it's stupid gamers judging games by their looks. Sure, not all the GameCube games have brilliant graphics, but can anyone honestly say all the games on the X-box and Playstation 2 have brilliant graphics? And what about that Super Mario comment? Sure, Super Mario 64 wasn't the most 'adult orientated' game, but it was difficult and at the same time fun to play! And Pokémon...the games series everyone loves to hate. Sure, the characters are cute and cuddly (the majority anyway) and the cartoon series, although I liked it, wasn't the most entertaining for all who watched it, but the games are bloody decent and very fun to play. Sure, Nintendo may be gettingover the top with the number of Pokémon in each game and by naming all the games after colours, but they still seem to get away with it all! If the games were so bad, why did Pokémon Yellow become the fastest and biggest selling game in the world, beaten soon after buy Pokémon Gold? Surely if it was all crap, no one would have bothered after Pokémon Yellow.

We are spoilt for choice. We've got more games than us critics deserve. There are loads of games being released year-by-year and I sure as hell aren't gonna be able to play them all, let alone complete all the ones I've got very soon. Just make sure you enjoy the games, not judge them by their boxes.

Good post Kerrang.

The thing is it comes down to choices in the end.

To a certain extent I dont care what the games look like - though I wouldn't to go back to the old flat screen Speccie type games - as long as the game is playable and FUN.

I just bought GTA Concept, the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is ace. I think Super Monkey ball is ace because forgetting the kiddie look to the game it gets damn hard and is enjoyable too.

Good post Kerrang!

I would have to say that I agree on the fact we are spoiled for choice by the games industy. There are so many console and games out there to fill our needs, but people just keep on complaining. Pikmin's too short, Mario's too childish, FIFA's too real (although I have to say this is one I take part in ;-)) and things like that.

If you don't like something, simply find something else. If someone doesn't like Nintendo having childish games, the only suggestion for them is to stop buying the childish games for that Nintendo console, and buy the more mature ones. It's often not true fact about games when people are complaining, it's more of an opinion.

Nice post.

Yet another good post! Keep it up Kerrang!

I agree with you simply because I've player SMB for many more hours than I have FFX. FFX has fun in it but a much bigger element is the linearity and seriousness of the game. SMB is a laugh and pick-up-and-playable. It's just what I prefer!
