Manchester United have agreed a British-record £30m fee with Leeds for England defender Rio Ferdinand.
Leeds had been demanding £35m for the 23-year-old World Cup star, but have now accepted a lower offer.

The deal makes Ferdinand the world's most expensive defender for the second time.

His £18.5m move from West Ham to Leeds in November 2000 made him the world's costliest defender.

Ferdinand's trip over the Pennines to Old Trafford beats the £22.5m Juventus paid Parma for French international Lilian Thuram.

In signing Ferdinand, Manchester United have broken their own British transfer record, set when they paid Lazio £28.1m for Argentine captain Juan Sebastian Veron.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale conducted the transfer from his holiday home in the south of France.

World record transfers
£46.5m: Zindedine Zidane (Juventus to Real Madrid).
£37m: Luis Figo (Barcelona to Real Madrid).
£35.7: Hernan Crespo (Parma to Lazio).
£32m: Gianluigi Buffon (Parma to Juventus).
£31m: Christian Vieri (Lazio to Inter Milan).
£30m: Rio Ferdinand (Leeds to Man Utd).

Ridsdale said: "The increase in Rio Ferdinand's valuation since his £18m transfer from West Ham clearly signals a significant return on our original investment.

"Subject to him agreeing personal terms and passing a medical, he will be a Manchester United player.

"Everyone at Leeds wishes him all the best in his future career."

Ridsdale spent Sunday morning locked in talks with Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon.

Leeds initially said a deal needed to be struck by 1200 BST for Ferdinand to move, but later dropped the deadline.

Ridsdale defends sale

The deal brings an end to a dramatic and long-running saga transfer.

Manchester United have tracked Ferdinand from a long way out and his performances during the World Cup only increased their desire to sign him.

Ferdinand returned form the World Cup to a flurry of activity surrounding his future.

Speculation increased when Leeds sacked manager David O'Leary, leaving replacement Terry Venables with the dificult task of holding on to Ferdinand.

Ferdinand handed in a transfer request on 17 July, but it was immediately turned down by Ridsdale.

He's gunna improve our defence without a doubt - but there are still holes there that could ruin our push for honours once again.

He may be a great player and everything, but even if he did cost £30m, he can't fill in ALL the gaps. And whose to say he'll work well with Blanc anyway? It could all end-up quite like last year again!
But with Liverpool winning the league.

All he's gotta do now is accept the terms and pass a medical! :D

Just look at how he's developed from the teenager-unkown he was when he first emerged in the West Ham first team all those years ago...
Then you'll know we're getting a great player with a lot of potential still to come!

His World Cup performances just go to show that he CAN perform to the best amongst the best at the world's biggest stage.
That also helps to reassure the United board that he'll be well worth the £30m investment!

To be honest, I never thought we'd get Rio this year.
I was pretty sure that Venebles and Ridsdale would be too persistant and keep him chained to Elland Road if nothing else would work!
Then again, he is a business man, and the money makes sense.

The only bad thing about this deal is that due to the high price-tag we're gunna be seeing a lot more multi-million-pound transfers over the next year in Europe - just like this one.
That problem will never end! :(

You should never buy a player based on their performance in one single major competition.

Just typical, mate! No-one from Manchester actually supports United as far as I know - they're all City fans.

United fans are just your average glory hunters. Half of them probably support Arsenal now, until United win something again. Which, with any luck, will be quite some time - especially now they've splashed out on another third-rate defender! ;-)

Of course, to some of us it was obvious he was going to sign for them... he's far too damn ugly to play anywhere else. ;-p
