Gendered Gaming
There seems to be a new trend in the games industry to encourage girls to get interested in Video games and Computers. One if the main ways of doing this has been by producing games which are aimed at a female audience.
Early examples of games aimed at girls used well known games and made them girly, for example, Ms PacMan was a version of the popular PacMan game wher the lead character was given a pink bow. Other examples of the "think pink" approach to gaming girls have included releasing pink versions of the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance.
More Recent attempts to produce female orientated games included such 'gems' as the Barbie, Mary Kate & Ashley and Britney spears games.:p
New companies led by feminists are dedicating themselves to producing games for girls, many of these concentrating on themes of friendship between girls and strong posative role models.
Of course...you and I can see theat this attitude towards girls and gaming is never going to work. Girls don't want to be segregated from boys and told this is type of game you should be playing. About 40% of the self proclaimed serious gamers in the USA are (or claim to be :p) female. Most of these female gamers play the same games as you guys.
So here is what I think the gaming industry needs to do.
1. Wake up and realise that there is a huge market of female gamers out there
2. Start to include images of female gamers in TV and magazine adverts
(well have you ever seen a girl in a game or comsole advert!...have you?)
3. Start giving us a choice of the lead role in games,like in Diablo 2 where a choice of 5 characters are available 2 of which are women. While not all women want to play female character the element of choice is bound to encourage us.
4. Oh yeah and don't stare at me like I'm some sort of alien every time I walk into GameStation :p
So I know its a bit of shock to see me posting seriously for a change, but there you go ;)

It's true that there are becoming more and more girl gamers out there, and possibly more games are needed to.. errr.. satisfy their... 'needs'.
