I've seen an incredibly advanced preview of the latest Halloween movie (which, to me, looks like it has been filmed by a camera at a cinema, although the quality is decent), and here's my opinions on it. I don't expect it to be out here for a good few months yet, so try as I did and get it off of WinMX or Kazaa (WinMX will give you 6000 searches for Spiderman, not that I'm promoting warez in any way, shape or form :D). Anyway, on with the review.

***WARNING - THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS***

The storyline begins as so, Jaimie Lee Curtis is back as the savy sister of killer Micheal Myers...but only for the first fifteen minutes of the film, after being butchered by her macabre brother in a Sanitarium, along with all other personnel. We are also told that at the end of the last Halloween film, just before he was about to be decapitated, Myers survived by crushing the larynx of a man and strapping his mask on him. Soon enough, we cut to suburban America, where six students have been selected to spend a night in the Myers' house for a live webcast - the whole thing is basically like a reality show. However, soon, several of the show's crew and the "inmates" themselves begin to go missing, and it is evident that something strange is going on. We, as the view know who it is, as we see Myers in his sadistic murders, but these victims are still skeptical, until death takes them one by one. Can they take him out once again?

From the first few minutes, it looks questionable as to whether this could be the last film or not, as Curtis is more grown up now, and that could either signal an end to the series, or generate an entirely new breed for it, where Myers terrorises her throughout her older years, but after viewing once (well, really as soon as Curtis is killed), it's evident that this may be the last series in the film, even though the ending leaves questions unanswered, especially as we are unsure as to whether Myers is actually dead (yes, again...). It's also evident that the inevitable has finally caught up with Curtis, as she is now in a sanitarium, and when she explains about how Myers survived, they really don't believe her, and so promptly feed her some pills. On another note, it has a more psychological type of fear to it (similar to that of Scream 3, where Sidney keeps seeing her dead mother), where, at one point, she stares out of the window and sees Micheal, but blinks, and he is gone. Whether that was him or not is a matter of opinion, as it could've been pure coincidence that when she sighted him, he went on a killing spree around the sanitarium. Optimistic? Yes, but that's the kind of view you need on a film that has had so many in a serious as this has.

From here, though, the film goes back to old horror roots, with some idiotic security guard hearing a noise and searching for it ALONE - who would be that stupid? And to be honest, I would've thought there would've been more security around a sanitarium really. The guards are stupid in another sense, as one of them is attacked by an "inmate, wearing a clown mask, pretending to be a serial killer" (who is actually "genuine", although I use the term loosely, and not Myers, as though you would expect). Don't these guys know ANYTHING about their patients? Obviously not, and to their fault, also, as they soon find themselves perforated with holes, courtesy of one Micheal Myers. Before that, though, the men in the control room see some movement on the camera (which is obviously Myers), and go to check it out - isn't their duty to stay in the damn control room and let the SECURITY GUARDS take care of it? Jaybus - could they be any dumber? And to add to this, when they go to check, he passes in front of one of the monitors - convinient? Nah, that's just a stupid horror character for you. I hate to keep criticising the characters (well, actually, I'm getting into the mood of it, when you have people this dumb), but they go down to the basement, find nothing after a few seconds and GO TO THE VENDING MACHINE! Come on! When there's a possibility of a violent inmate loose (or worse, as they discover at their peril), it's no time to grab a snack! After they split up and one of them hears a blood curdling scream, one of them actually walks down, UNARMED, and finds nothing, not having the slightest of his wits about him, only to find his partner's head stuffed inside a washing machine, only to be made short work of himself by Myers. Myers is no Einstein himself - he walks right past a witness (the inmate pretending to be a serial killer) and makes no attempt to kill him. Great...

The next cut compensates for all that idiocy, though, as we see an impressive battle between brother and sister - Curtis and Myers. She hooks him up on the roof and nearly kills him, but when he begins holding his head, reminiscent of when he was a baby, she holds back finishing him off and instead tries to pull off his mask to ensure that it's the right Myers this time, to her fault, as she is stabbed, and promptly dies, but not before throwing the "I'll see you in hell" line.

It's very reminiscent of modern horror (Scream etc) at how regularity has been juxtaposed with a series, and to good effect, where we now meet the main cast of the rest of the film (although many of them will find themselves dead within the next hour or so). Of notable appearance are Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks, who play Freddie (not Kreuger, before you ask) and Nora respectively. On a divergent note, is it pure coincidence that Rhymes is named after one of horror's greatest names? Methinks not. And something else that also seems to mystify me, is it me or do they always refer to her as a bloke!? What I find once again pointless is how after Freddie offers them the night in the Myers' household, how they accept so quickly, if accepting at all, in that it's the house of a known nutter, and he could return at any moment to slash their guts to high heaven. Also reminiscent of modern horror, on another note of how stupid the characters are, at one point, Nora turns around to make a cuppacino (what is it with all the far-too-detailed references to what food and drink they have?), the cameraman she argued with is stabbed, dragged off, and the camera repositioned by Myers in the time it takes to make a coffee drink, and she didn't have the slightest suspiscion or hear the slightest sound? Please...Still, there's a great camera shot of the stairs.

Once again, the modern feel creeps back in, as video equipment is strapped onto their heads to record their every movement throughout the house (surely if they die, doesn't that put Freddie, the producer of the show, in jail for some sort of conspirating to murder charge?). Why the hell they split into three teams of two is beyond me, as the regular person would probably stick together with the whole group when a raging killer on the loose, or is that just me? And then when Jenna screams out, but they find out that she is faking it - how damn retarded can you get? However, I was chuffed to hear Bill say "I'm gonna get her for that. Just watch." Pity he's sliced and diced by Myers moments later (who is actually Freddie, I think, as it gets confusing here, as there are two Micheal's at this point, one is her, one is real), though, so he never gets to carry out the deed...So, Freddie follows Micheal around in exactly the same clothes (thinking he is the camerman, with the hilarious "Scoot! Go on, get!" line), but what possesses someone to masquerade as a killer, especially when he has struck. She is either sick, demented, a demented sick person, or a great practical joker. I doubt the latter, especially after listening to some of her so-called "music".

The next moment is once again divergent from the main action of the film, and features Myles watching the webcast in a computer room, and comes across a football player and mermaid who want to have sex, apparently. He asks them if they want to watch the film, they oblige (after some convincing from the mermaid) and at the end, about half the party gather around, watching. Young and naive as they are, Jim and Donna are looking for somewhere to have sex, also, and idiotically, find somewhere and begin. In a place like that, this lot get up to things and do things that no normal human being would do, and just defies common logic. Ah well, there is some humor in this rather boring, scene where some rocks fall down, disturbing them during the "deed", and hence forth creating a potential soil moment. What I'm getting at is one of the pieces of rock reads "Made in f***ing Taiwan." Ah well, he goes to get something, she explores and find Micheal's bedrooms and gets impaled, nothing much, but made me feel somewhat sick, made me think of period's too much...
We then change to a sicker part of the movie, where Kara is looking through Myers' colouring books and finds pictures he drew as a child of people mutilated with knives etc. Micheal sneaks up on her, and what I find strange is this: he doesn't kill her immidiately, and hence gives her time to run for her life...She finds Rudy and Jenna, but for some reason, they were getting totally p**sed out of their heads, which is dangerous in itself, but a killer being about doesn't make it any better, what idiots they are. When Micheal is having the cack kicked out of him, we find out that it's Freddie in disguise again, and this obviously isn't doing her any favours. There's something very strange about her (if her music wasn't freaky enough) - (s)he is a soulmate of sorts with Micheal, as she seems to have some sort of obsession with him or something of the sort. I know it's evil, but after Jenna finds the cut up cameraman, I couldn't help but burst out laughing as Micheal decapitates her, as she herself was just talking about that, only to recieve it herself. Jim tries, stupidly, to kill Micheal bare-handed, but has his head crushed in a great gorefest. And Rudy gets pinned to a door with a number of carving knives.

The technological advancements since H20 and previous encounters are once again chronicled as she talks to him via a camera and recieves his messages from her Palm Pilot - you'd never see that in any other horror movie, and it's glad to see that realism in technology in horror films has finally been recognised, and they don't always rely on heavy duty weapons. Up til now, it's only really been sci-fi films that have this degree of "sci-fii-osity" (even though that's the only sci-fi part in it, see Jason X for a shat sci-fi horror flick). Back to the subject, in the end, weapons are the order of the day though when you're facing someone like Micheal, and when she finds out Micheal is approaching, screams and promptly exits the room, not before gashing her leg on the window sill. Now it's time for the great battle scene, where she escapes, and is pulled aside by Freddie again, very reminiscent of many kidknapping scenes in films. Anyway, Freddie strangles him with a cord and boots him out the window, he isn't dead, however.

Freddie and Sara go to escape, but Myles tells him that Micheal still isn't down...for good. Micheal comes back and stabs Freddie in the chest, giving Sara precious time to run...and grab a chainsaw...which is out of petrol. She sets the whole place alight, in very cool style ( a high point of the film), throws him off of the place and electrifies him, but not before falling onto electrical equitment herself, getting stuck. Freddie's there to save the day, and finish him off once and for all...or so we think.

And so they look at Micheal's body as it's wheeled into the ambulence, and Sara is told that the tenant at her house is called Micheal Myers. Then Micheal's eyes open inside the body bag.

Anyone else smell ANOTHER sequel? I'll review Jason X soon.

Thanks for reading,
LF.
