My family name is one of the few families that has a royal family crest which our family can wear with pride. Ours is interesting cause it is three birds top, left and right between 5 stripes criss crossed and three stars. Tha symbolises our family's links with America in some way. I just wondered if any one else here as shield crest with a family name too.

There has been. The reason its not widely known is basically down to the cultural indocrination of succeeding invaders. The Anglo-saxons superceded the brits in the 6th/7th century's AD and rewrote history according to their own views and new masters of the Island (see Bede's Anglo-Saxon Chronicle). Then came the Normans in 1066 who again rewrote history and under Edward I (Longshanks from Braveheart) they created a new version of the old Roman Britain with London and the Normans as the overlords. In the 19th century English scholars established a standard view of history to accompnay and justify their developing empire which was a fusion of Anglo-Saxon and Norman ideas, totally ignoring anything before and prehistoric savagery. Even though nearly all the Churches and place names of South Wales in partic refer to a very civilised and sophisticated people running the show during that time.

My family history probably goes back to scandinavia somewhere. My surname (Rippingale) is from an english town of the same name, which dates back to Norman landings. The name itself can be traced to the Norman language standard of the time.

However, my family on my father's side is actually Welsh, this does breed some confusion...

But of course conveniently over history more and more references to this happening have mysteriously 'vanished' thus leading the majority of English people to believe that they are infact true Brits.

The fact that you have a family crest means that you are almost certainly not a pure brit. Let me explain...

When the Viking Saxons conquered Britain, they forced the true british peoples into the highlands of scotland and wales. Indeed, it is the Gaelic and Celtic language that are those of the true British people.

Now, these people of the hills have remained very insular throughout all the invasions of Britain, while the rest of the british people have mingled with the Romans, Saxons, Normans and God knows who else. Since it is the people who are decended from aristrocrates that have family crests, then they are almost 100% guaranteed not to be 100% british!

So ner :p
