I've decided I want to tinker with PHP. I understand that it is free - is that true?

Is it something that can be installed on a PC for 'practice', or does it all have to be uploaded to the server first?

Is there anything I specifically need to know before downloading and installing it? Do I need anything else to go with it?

You know... all the usual dumb questions that us beginners ask... :-)

I've found the JavaScript in easy steps to be good, so perl in easy steps will probably be equally as helpful.

Freeola :)
I don't actually know any other free php domains, sorry.

Wookie Monster, try searching Amazon.co.uk for a CGI book, I havn't found the customer reviews very reliable though so you'll probably have to look elsewhere for reviews on the books they sell.
I'm pretty sure PHP can do most things if not everything CGI scripts can do, might take a little bit more work though :)
Have fun.

I find that the PHP Developers Cookbook is quite good, it's got a lot of scripts and explained very well.

Yep, it does work on WinXP. I have WinXP Pro and it works just like it did on 98, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure, but to be honest, its a case of Download it and try it :o) I'm sure it will work, but if not you can just remove it again.

Doesn't XP have a Personal Server program on it?

Thanks for the info.

Do you happen to know if that works with WinXP, as it's not mentioned on the download page?

Download omniHTTP, it's a home PC server, it supports php and cgi scripts + it's free!
http://www.omnicron.ca/httpd/download.html
(thats for Win98+)

there are website tutorials but i've just bought a book and i've found it a lot easier as you can read over and over while fiddling around on the PC instead of flicking from page to page + they're quite cheap, if you don't like it sell it on...

'SAMS learn php in 24 hours' is great as it has more than just php tutorials in it :) (XML..etc)

... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
