I think that it is a joke! I mean, why have we got to wait ages for thing such broad band in the UK. The Japanese get things such as games and broad band as soon as Sony think of it. While we (one of the biggest consumers of playstation and other console games and machines) have to wait for years to catch up. The PC has had Internet gaming since the year dot. So why have the consoles only now stated to bring their own version of Internet gaming out now? Well, up until now Europe has been lagging behind where broad band is concerned and if you want broad band then it is going to cost you around £30 a month which is a lot more than Internet through a modern your PC will cost. So why have Sony not just used a modem system? Well, the main problem with modems is that they are too slow, online going with a modem is really bad and the lag-time is more than ten times that of broad band. If you have ever played games online through a modem and then tried the same game through broad band you would certainly feel the difference. The same can be said for downloading large files such as music and video files. At the moment it is hard to say when and if broad band will be coming to Europe. Sony are watching closely at how the system operates in Japan and the US but if all goes well over there then it can only be a matter of time until Europe wakes up and gets broad band. How much is this unit going to cost? Well, I have heard that the Japanese got theirs for free! Yes, for free! Would you believe it! However it was only being given away in a subscription package where they needed to pay £5.50 a month. There was also a package where the Hard Disc Drive and Network adaptor were sold for approximately £115 however there are other packages available so the HDD and Network adaptor may not cost that much over here, with a bit of luck. The biggest cheese at the moment is that when you have all the items (the Hard disc drive and network adaptor the game you want to play) you need to install the game like on a PC then you have to register a name and other information just like in PC gaming and in some games (like Final Fantasy 11) you have to create your own character, that sounds good yes but the developers have been a bit crafty because it's going to costs' 55p per character that you make. Now is it just me or is there something wrong with that? You just bought the game for £40, you just bought the Hard disk drive and network adaptor for £100, you are paying a monthly subscription of £7 and now to play the game you have to pay 55p to create a character. I know that the more characters you make the more memory it will take up on the Sony network but why can they not just let you create your first character for free and any other ones you make they can charge you for them separately? The answer of course is that the game developers and Sony want more money from you. There is one problem with Sony's idea for getting more money out of the average gamer, you see to create a character for a game for the Playstation 2 it will cost say 55p but to create that same character for the same game on the PC it will cost you nothing at all. You see the developers of PC game's see online gaming as fun and a bit of a larf where people from all age groups come together to talk play and have general fun. The games developers are happy because they have made £40 per game sold and the gamers are happy because they can play there mates online for free on the games server that the developers have set up so the consumers of the game can have fun with their mates. Sony must see only money when it comes to online gaming otherwise they would only charge the monthly fee. So why should we fork out all this money to play games online then? Well, it is not just games that are going to be on Sony's network. Other things such as music and videos will be accessible to listen to and download. Also Sony have plans to post demos of new games that are coming out online so instead of buying a demo disk you can just download it on to your hard drive, play it and when you are done playing you delete it from your hard drive, easy. There are also planes to put full down loaderble games online so you don't even need to go to the shops any more you simply download the game and play, the cost of the game will be added to the monthly subscription bill at the end of the month. This is a really good idea because most online games you only need the disk to install the game and that's it. The only problem with this is that what's going to happen to all the gaming shops and all the people who work in the shops?
