A mysterious Mario evil twin emerges as the lead villain in Mario Sunshine. Huge artwork here

We've known for ages that Super Mario Sunshine sees poor old Mario framed for making a right old mess and, as a result, has to rush round like a water cannon-wielding mentalist to clear it all up. But what we haven't known is who is responsible for causing so much trouble for the friendly little plumber fella.

Until now. Brand new Mario Sunshine artwork finally reveals the culprit to be a Mario doppelganger who appears to be made of ice. The as-yet-unnamed fiend is carrying a large brush (that appears to have small face on it) and is getting, er, fire-coloured paint everywhere like a right mucky pup.

As to where Mario's new nemesis emerged from, we can only speculate, although no doubt Bowser is involved somewhere along the way. Perhaps this means, though, that the new character will take over from Bowser as Mario's leading nemesis, freeing Bowser to appear in his own series of games, in the same way that Wario did. It's all filthy speculation at the moment of course, so let us know what you think.

Here's the link - there's a pic there as well...

Wario would RULE as a boss, simple because he is human and the fight would be excellent.

Bowser would be very similar to the fight in Mario 64 as there is not much more that can be done from that genre and character.

Or maybe Big Boo again....

Ahhhh sod the plot the game looks the nuts. Look at the plot of Mario 64

Princess Peach bakes a Cake, oh crap she's been kidnapped must get stars defeat Bowser and rescue her. Not exactly complex but the game was so good it hurt.

Nah, Bowser will always be the number one nemesis for Mario, freeing him up for his own gaming series wouldn't really work, the big fat dragon thing.

I reckon the "other" Mario will be like Dark Link from Zelda OOT a main baddy but not the final boss oh no.

And I do so hope the Koopa family returns like in the NES versions, that would be excellent, lets hope the storyline picks up a little too.

Never know, it could be Wario...

Doubtful though seeing as he has his own game now... I would probably bet on a new bad guy this time... but I hope this doesn't spell the end of Bowsers reign as Mario's no. 1 villian!!!

I doubt Bowser will make much of an appearance, if any, in this game. It's supposed to be Mario's vacation away from Bowser.

Though, looking like it's based on Super Mario World, it should include mini-bosses as some of the koopa family like the demented Iggy Koopa!

Even if Bowser isn't involved in this Mario game, they simply can't chuck Bowser out as Mario's no.1 nemesis... It just wouldn't be the same!!!
