OK. So Unreal Tournament 2003 is coming out in the next few months, my P3 500Mhz, 128MB, Win 98 machine will probably choke when I try to run it, so I need a new box. I don't need a monitor, just a good CPU, lots of memory, big HD, WinXP Pro and good video card.

What I want to do is use my old machine on a broadband connection, it can be my proxy / firewall, possible even host some UT games on it, and have a new machine as a workstation connected to the old machine for Internet access...

Anybody got any ideas for a solution to my problems? Can you recommend anywhere to buy a box, I know SR do boxes on their own, but I can't find 'em in the PC section, can anybody also tell me about the best place to get a broadband connection from?

Thanks people.

Cool. just looked at that... Why not let people specify all that stuff before clicking on buy? Much more friendly, and less psychologically challenging for users.

Thanks for clearing that. You how about giving people the option to do that before they put anything in the basket?? I just went to the Mesh site and they let me build one according to my spec, so I could see what it costs and compare it to your prices. Much more usable, n'est pas?

Stuff like that also clears up confusion like I just had. Just a thought... anyway, I'm off to add stuff to my basket and see what happens :)

Looking at SR's mag it looks like MAXXPCs are sold with monitors but they sell with upgrades, e.g. 17" monitor for £44 extra, something like that, i've never bought one though, Wookiemonster said he was very happy. :)

http://www.ssc.co.uk and http://www.europc.co.uk are also good, europc sell year old office PCs (Dell) for very good prices although i've never bought one :)

Thanks for the help, I took a look at the MaxxPC stuff before posting, and the pictures had monitors in, so I thought they cam with monitors, but it seems they are optional... confusing that.

As for Mesh Turbonutter, yep, I think I'll give them a look-in, they have been around for a long time so they must be doing something right.

Thanks again.

Aside from SR, who make excellent boxen, you may want to look at http://www.mash.co.uk/. For your problem, a simple crossover network should be fine. Just plug broadband in to that, get 10/100 rj45 network cards for each of them and plug them in. 98 <-> XP networks are easy enough to set up. Talk to reaper about firewalls and portforwarders under Linux.
