Sphere - Michael Crichton (Sci fi)
The Shining - Stephen King (Horror)
The Stand - " " " (A bit long tho)
Gateway - Frederik Pohl (Sci Fi)
I highly recommend
"Z for Zacheriah" by Robert C O'Brian(sp on all that!). I know it's a GCSE standard text but it is a VERY good book. It's about a girl in America who survives a nuclear war due to living in a valley with strange weather conditions. She wonders what to do when another living person enters the valley.....
"The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. True story about an outbreak of the Ebola virus in America. I'm sure it is slightly exaggerated but it is still a good read. I read it when I was in Newquay when I was 17.
"The Stand" by Stephen King. Splendid book about the apocolypse. Unless you have already guessed, I like books about the end of the world.
I'd think of some more but I am tired. Try these three out though!
But I recommend full heartedly anything by Charles Bukowski. Especially Post Office. It's really easy to read because he writes minimalistically, and it's extremely funny in a Goatboy humour kind of way. Also it seems to be on offer in Fopp's tiny books section at £3, where you can also by "Heart of Darkness" by Jospeh Conrad for the same price, the book on which "Apocalypse Now" was very loosely based. In fact Fopp is a pretty good place for cheap, but really good books. And they only seem to stock the typical cool studenty books. I'd recommend most highly anything by Bukowski, apart from Women, which isn't meant to be as hot as his other stuff. You'll probably finish Post Office in a day because it's funny and readable at the same time. And the central character is an alcoholic :-)
Oh and Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is brilliant, in a mad-cap way. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read because it's so utterly absurd. Don't let the blurb/picture/WWII setting put you off. The book is random genius. It's like the best comedy sketch program that was never made, and it has a serious underbelly too, but mostly it's just funny.
If you're after something poncey and heavy, on the other hand, I highly recommend Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahuniak. Theres a pretty good chance it will mess with your head.
