Not sure about WinMX but Kazaa is bursting with spyware, and won't function without it. Also if you read their service agreement then there's some very sinister stuff in there. You can fix this by using the free client from www.kazaalite.com. Windows only at the moment, though.
I discovered loads of new bands that way and went and bought CDs by the best of them. That's CDs that I never would have bought without Audiogalaxy giving me the chance to find and try new bands.
It's a sad day if this is the end. Audiogalaxy was the best, by a very long way. Meh.
OpenFT is another good alternative though. Best P2P network I've ever used, there just aren't too many users.

Seems like audiogalaxy is dead. Jeez, the amount of records I bought AFTER hearing stuff on audiogalaxy. Unbelievable.
Well, screw the record industry: I'm now going to pirate everything on major labels on principle.
