1) In 1966 France finished bottom of their group (the same group as England with 1 point). In 2002, they finished bottom of their group with 1 point..
2) England of 1966 may have won more games in the group stages (they won 2, drew 1) than the England of 2002 (who drew 2 and won 1). But since a win was worth 2 points back then, they finished with 5 points... just like the England of today...
3) England got a 0-0 draw in the group stages in 1966 against Uruguay.
4) England did not lose a single game in the entire tournament - the worst result being a 0-0 draw with Uruguay... England are currently yet to lose.
5) Brazil, who won the world cup in 1962, went out in the group stages of the next world cup 1966 finishing 3rd behind Hungary and Portugal. In 2002, defending champions France went out in the group stages....
6) In the world cup before 1962, England had gone out in the round after the group stages, the quarter finals, losing 3-1 to Brazil. In 1998, England lost to Argentina in the second round, straight after the group stages..
7) England had kept a clean sheet throughout the first four games. Also however they had at that time the least goals scored against them - like the England today that has only conceded one goal from Sweden in 4 matches. (1966 England then let in one goal against Portugal then 2 from Germany in that famous world cup final)
8) England beat Argentina 1-0 in 1966 as well as in 2002..
9) West Germany the eventual finalists and runners up, won their group with two wins and a draw (the draw being with group runners up Argentina). In 2002, Germany won two games, and got a draw against... group runners up Republic of Ireland.
10) West Germany also hammered group losers Switzerland 5-0 in 1966. In 2002, they hammered group losers Saudi Arabia 8-0. Their 5-0 victory was the best in that tournament.. Surely no one is going to win more than 8-0 at these stages?
11) If Germany and England win all their games they will meet at and only at the world cup final thus repeating the 1966 result...
It could happen.. couldn't it?
Please add any new likenesses with 1966 you can discover. Hope this boosts people's confidence that we can beat Brazil/Belgium (I think it's Brazil we're scared of though).
Here's a good resource of all the results of world cup matches...

15) In 1966 North Korea were the first Asian team to reach the quarter finals and in 20002 South Korea are the second Asian team to reach the quarter finals.
Yes, it has been poor by their standards, but they are a tough task to face when they are on a good day - whenever that is!
What I mean is that of we come to face them when they're feeling ontop, it won't be anywhere near easy!

Not to mention a convincing 3-0 win over a Denmark team who played far from poorly!
Everyone was saying it was a poor performance by Denmark, but I don't think they were giving England enough credit. Denmark had most of the possession, and you don't get that playing bad football. They were good - we were better!

Spain haven't had a good day yet. They've played no-one special, and the Irish gave them a thorough going over. Plus they always blow it in big tournaments.
Brazil will be tough (assuming they beat Belgium). It's a mid-afternoon game which will suit them more than us, but they couldn't defend if their lives depended on it. Their policy is to score more than they concede, and we all know that such tactics are easily undone when you meet a solid defence, which England currently have.
As long as our boys don't get over-whelmed by the thought that "we're playing Brazil", it should be a good game. We can't really lose, though - because if we beat Brazil, we'll be outstanding, and if we lose - well, there's never been any shame in losing to Brazil.
As for Brazil. Well, if they were as good as everyone says, they would have won it a few more times than they have don't you think?
They are strange though, but it's luck and not coincidences that have gotten us this far.
I still don't see how we'll win this World Cup - we could never beat Brazil or Spain when they're on a good day!

It's kind of different. He said they were the last team to go out in that stage, but I agree I was trying to work out whether it was the same
12/13) In 1966 England had three west ham players I believe... and we do so this year. My dad said something along those lines.
