No you just keep all your old computer bits but exchange the motherboard for a new motherboard and fit the new processor on.

£200 for a XP1600(1.4Ghz) and a motherboard. I suggest you look around the internet for sites that sell PC equipment as you can pick up so real bargins. www.pcindex.co.uk is pretty good.

From SR a XP1600 processor is £100. And the Motherboard is another £100. The 512Mb RAM could be bought for about £60-70 if you look around the internet. So for less than £300 you will have a great PC. Then buy a graphics card maybe spend £150 or more. So for £450 you will have a very fast PC which will easily play all the latest games and the upcomming releases.

Wouldnt getting a 1.4G Athlon cost like £1000+?

Because my computer has a intel pentium 3 logo on it does that mean if I get a motherboard it needs to be Pentium 3? Or can it be Pentium 4?

Well what is the actual speed of the processor? It may be worth spending some money to upgrade the motherboard and to get a 1.4Ghz Athlon. Both the processor and motherboard should cost less than £200. Then see how much you can spend on a grahpics card. In the SR magazine have a look at the memory bandwidth for the card as the higher the number the better it should perform. Also the chipset is important, as a NV20 is better than a NV15.

I would recommend that you upgrade your machine to a 1.4 Athlon and have 512mb 133mhz RAM. This will then be a good basis for a good gaming PC. Then spend the money on a decent graphics card. If you can afford it go for a Geforce 4 Ti4600.

"What is your spec of your computer? And what do you want the graphics card to do e.g. play the latest games?"

Specs. Ack. This should be fun.

Intel Pentium 3
Windows 98
256MB RAM
System BUS Type: ISA
Machine Type: IBM PC/AT
Processor Type: x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3 (whatever that means)
Processor Vendor: GenuineIntel

=/

Yeah. Playing the latest games.

Not really. Its ok but its PCI which isnt as good as AGP. If you have an AGP port on your motherboard then get an AGP card. The actually graphics card is ok, as it will be able to run games ok but may suffer if your PC has low specs. If your after a cheap graphics card then it should be ok. But if you have more to spend get a Geforce 3 Ti500 as they are better than any of the Geforce 4 MX series.

If you can afford £160 then get the Geforce 4 Ti200 as this is better than the Geforce 4 MX440. If not spend £125 on an Geforce 4 MX440 AGP as the AGP port is alot faster than a PCI.

If you havent got an AGP slot on your motherboard then it may be wise to get a new motherboard. As well as making sure your PC has a decent processor(1Ghz +) and 256Mb RAM or above.
