When me and my bro played a 99 stock game in one of the item boxes a redead appered from inside. It latches onto you and gives 10% damage until you can get rid of it.
Now if you go to the item switch you will see a small section at the bottom with a space that looks like an item should be there. My theory is that the redeads were going to be an item but were got rid of in later development but still show up everyso often as a bonus...

They're in adventure mode on the Zelda level, those kinda Zombie things that grab onto you.

Yup, I've had a Re-Dead and Octorok, a Goomba and I even gota Polar Bear once.
I read some where that the last slot was going to be a beer bottle, you could smash it on the floor then stab people in the face with it. Apparently they had to take it out at the last minute because they weren't sure whether they'd get it past the censors.
I got a redead in a party ball- god that was funny.
Hmmm... I saw that space on the bottom right too, I just figured that they ran out of ideas for items. It could be true about redeads being left out.
