I hack at work. Hack code out that is. I think you mean "crack", whereby systems are broken into, rather than "hack" which means hacking out code for developmental purposes. I suppose it is derived from journalists who are called "hacks", because they do so much hacking away at the keyboard all day, much like developers, who do the same.

As an aside, the first recognised cracker was Cap n' Crunch, who discovered that a free whistle given away in cereal boxes (the ceral was called Cap n' Crunch, hence the moniker) when blown down a public telephone handset, would generate just the right sound frequency to enable him to make a free phone call.
