But Is it all really worth it. War as a whole I mean?
Because I don't think it is.
We certainly don't gain much from war, but there is one thing we may gain and that is our posisition as a country.
In the long run the it's not really worth it.
War in (most cases) is about revenge.
A perfect example is the War On Terror.
Most of the major European contries are taking part in this war.
The two main Participants is the UK and the USA.
The bloke behind thisis none other than G.W.Bush.
He said that the terrorists acts were unjustified. and that justice needed to be served.
Indeed they were unjustified, but I would hardly call Launching a potentially Dangerous All-Out-War on terror justified in itself.
It's all very well punishing the scums that performed the horrific acts on Sept11th, but where does it get us?
not very far.
Sure we'd feel a lot better but it just makes us even more enemies, which ain't very good at all.
But we have gained some valuable allies during the War On Terror.
We have also gained Knowledge of other races and other Terrorist Orginisations which could prove a potential threat.
But I think that the War On Terror was a Good call.
War can be a good thing, if it is used at the right time and if it is not unjustified.
War can Strengthen countries and make them more powerfull.
It can even gain them even more allies.
but it can also be their downfall.
Look at some of the other foreighn countries deeply engrossed in war.
Some of them have been at War For over 30Years.
And that cant be good for the economy.
War has gotten them Nowhere because they don't have the superior tacticall skills and strategies that the SuperPowers Do.
If you are a small poor contry then you can't affors to declare war but if you are one of the better of countries then War (If properly thought out) can be a valuable peice of Millitary action.
So there is some good sides to War but there are also some bad things too.
On the whole the, Is War really worth it?
Well that's for you decide!

Why? Because we are having a serious conversation...?

You refer to the Cold War I believe. and if anything the world SHOULD have got a lot better... USA and Russia were suspiscious mainly because of their vastly different ideologies- capitalism, and communism. Now there are no major powers that are communist. But countries are still suspiscious.
In my veiw the world couldn't really get in a worse state than it already is.
Too many countries are suspicous of eachother.
Remember about 20 years ago,
The Americans were very suspisious of the Russians and the russians were very suspisious of the Americans.
And look where it got them,
Nowhere.
The same will happen to the rest of us if the world doesn't (Forgive me for being so blunt) GROW UP a little!
Any country that launches a pre-emptive
> nuclear strike will be an enemy to the world, and their nation will be
> brought to utter ruin.
So... USA dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima 1945? True, the Japs didn't have nukes to retaliate with.
However, I'd personally say that any country that launches a pre-emptive nuclear strike nowadays will be the country that brings on Armageddon (or the aetheist equivalent). The problem then is that although there will be many things to rebuild fuelling creation, it'll be only the insects that are still around to create anything.
And you say we would not have various things if we did not have war. Why not? War does drive technology, but it also holds it back. How much quicker would technology advance if countries worked together, rather than being hostile, suspicious and hateful of each other, and so making sure information and technology isn't leaked out to another country. How much quicker would mankind have landed on the moon if Russia and the USA had been working together, sharing knowledge and expertise, rather than spying on one another?
And destruction being the catalyst for creation... maybe so. But nowadays when something is destroyed it may not be rebuilt at all, at least not if it isn't financially viable. Nowadays effeciency constantly being improved, and that is why many of the advancements we see are being made. Companies want greater efficiency for greater profits. Therefore technology must be advanced.
And 'we' is a very broad term. I don't want to go fight a war. I'd much rather live without the threat of nucleur weapons hanging over my head.
"We are a race of warriors, and as warriors, we will war. This is our history, our design, our destiny."
If History is there for anything isn't it to learn from past mistakes...? War is not inevitable. I don't believe in a God, but if we were designed by some omnipotent deity, what are we? The Deity's amusement? It can watch as we compete for power on an insignificant rock floating around space.
War is not our fate. War is not inevitable. But it will be if we continue to belive it is.
> I dont want ot ruin your debate but what does that have to do with the
> future of gaming?
If we get nuked we can't play games anymore. Therefore there will be a smaller market for games developers / publishers to sell their games to, so the gaming industry will suffer, and may go into decline. Also, the bods at Rare could well be killed too if we were nuked... that would be a grave blow to Nintendo and the whole gaming community. So there :P
It has a poetic touch to it.
I agree with you .
War is but both the giver and taker of life.
War brings hope but at the same time it brings devestation and sadness to all.
War gives a country authority but it can also reduce a country to pulp.
War is a very powerfull thing indeed if it is used correctly.
But War is so often missused and it flings countries who missuse it into Chaos.
From This more powerfull countries Learn from other countries mistakes.
War is something that usually is used if there are no other options available.
I myself don't see the point in going to war over a small stretch of land that could easily be divided in two.
Or maybe a Diplomatic stand would help but it can often cause Confusion.
Fighting over a stretch of land is silly and a waste of recsources.
And so brings forth the Kashmir Crisis.
Paskistan and India are edging ever closer to war.
But we ain't exactly about to stand aside and watch two countries (Both of which are Nuclear armed)blow the hell out of eachother whilst at the same time bringing chaos to the global economy and damadge to our atmosphere.
All it takes is just one Nuke to be fired and hey presto it effects the whole world.
If all this was to happen over one Nuke then god help us if more than one Nuke was fired.
My friends, If there were ever a time to start ebleiving in GOD then now would be a good time.
> The threat of a Nuke being launched by one of these two countries has
> grown considerably over the past few weeks.#
I'm not concerned, the only option they have is to use conventional tactics. They know the world would take vengeance for nuclear tactics. Europe first, but there is hardly a nation in the world that wouldn't want to jump in and show their disdain for those who believe they are above the nuclear deadlock. Any country that launches a pre-emptive nuclear strike will be an enemy to the world, and their nation will be brought to utter ruin.
What would we be without war? A peace loving society living much as we do now, but without all the hate and agression? Don't believe it for a second.
War has driven mankind for tens of thousands of years. War for food, war for land, war for profit. War drives the very essence of humanity. That essence being selfishness. We don't just have needs. We have wants, we have desires, we have GREED.
War drives the evolution of human technology, and this cannot be ignored. We want to take something from another family, from another tribe, another kingdom, another country. We forge weapons to attack with, and we attack. In order to defend themselves, the people you are attacking will forge defences, in the form of more weapons, or in the form of defences designed to make your weapons less useful. In light of this, you must forge better weapons, or devices to make their devices less useful. Counter, after counter. This is the gift war has brought mankind. Without war, would we have explosives? would we have jets? would we have microwaves? would we have the internet? The answer to all of these is likely no. We create these things because of the need to be better than those who would try to take away what is ours.
Destruction is the catalyst of creation. something is destroyed, and must be rebuilt. But if it must be rebuilt, must it be rebuilt the same? If so, then it faces the same danger of being destroyed. It only makes sense to make it stronger, more durable, more advanced.
If nothing was ever in danger of being destroyed by war, and nothing ever got destroyed by war, why would we ever want to improve on it? The answer is we wouldn't. If it's not broken, it won't get fixed, and war provides the destruction we need to advance. If not war, then the threat of war to keep us trying to out-think our potential opponents.
A lot of people seem to think we are a race of peaceful creatures who occaisionally get upset at eachother, and throw a few bombs about. This is not the case. We are a race of warriors, and as warriors, we will war. This is our history, our design, our destiny.
