The fact that the SNES outsold the Megadrive nearly 2:1 worldwide obviously doesn't affect YOUR argument now, does it.

The SNES was beaten by the Mega Drive, then the N64 was badly thrashed by the less powerful PlayStation and next the GC by PS2. I have played on the GC and god are those games simplistic and boring.
