Put Heskey in attack with Owen against the Argentinians and he'll shine. He has a point to prove, and I think his size combined with Owen's pace will scare their defenders.

Why would he care?

If I was a professional football player (say I was in Hesky's position) then I really wouldn't give a damn what the public thought of me. I'd have to give an interview and just say:

"To all those who think I'm crap, feck off. I have loads of money. I play football for my country. You have nothing compared to me!"

Why play Heskey on the left? Put him up with Owen, put Ashley Cole on the left of midfield and put Bridge at left back. Problem solved.

Oh, and try to keep the swearing down. I'm no saint, but there's no need for the 'c' word at least, even if you have used a couple of stars to cover up the middle of the word.

Bah, you're just like the people I talked about earlier. Why do think he has no confidence with people like you around?

He's not a natural midfielder, but did you notice that the couple of times he was able to run at them they were scared of him, and he got behind the defence? And he got a few crosses in. He was made to play there, you really think he'd choose to play on the left of midfield when he's not even left-footed.

And what about when he was moved up-front, he came closest to scoring for us in that second half with that fantastic turn and run.

What did Vassell do that was so special. Hold the ball up for about a minute? Take on defenders, and then get the ball taken off him before he got a shot in? He was lively, but in my view he didn't trouble Hedman's goal at all really.

Heskey and Owen should definitely be the pairing in attack, they work really well together.

Danny Mills is an ace. I know we should get behing the lads, but what the hell was he doing? IDIOT. If he scores a goal, I'm sure I'll forgive him somehow, though. What utter, foolish, bloody complacency by Mills. Danny you *! You don't deserve to be at the World Cup. Sven is mostly to blame though I fear. He's made a number of selection mistakes in the past, and in the course of today’s game. The team only took on the shape it should have had from the beginning, in the last 20 minutes. I mean, WTF is he doing wasting the physical, goal scoring presence of Heskey on the left of midfield? And on top of that he puts two light-weights together up front who're completely relying upon their pace and the midfield ability to provide defence splitting passes.

A* utter waste, we should have won this game. Now we're up against one of the tournament favourites in Argentina with our backs up against the wall. It didn't need to be this way. I suppose a single mistake from one of the defenders was inevitable considering the rest of the muppets playing for England. Only other decent player was Vassel. Vassel had an excellent game considering his lack of experience at this level. Far superior to Owen in every respect. Considering Larsson and Ljungberg were so quiet, Sweden should not have been able to keep up with England. It's going to take considerable improvement if we don't want to get humiliated by Argentina on Friday. Hopefully with Butt, Beckham and Dyer fit the passing will be much better. Mills is still the one who gifted Sweden with a goalscoring opportunity when he could have quite easily cleared it into touch. While he's not the only player that deserves our scorn right now, he's certainly one of the front-runners. The name Danny Mills just sounds like a short and fat radio presenter. Wait, wasn't he that guy in Grange Hill who was found dead in Mr Bronson's car? Nah! That was Danny Kendall! Ah, too many memories!

Pshah, us English and our scapegoats. We were rubbish second half, we made enough mistakes for Sweden to have scored at least four (lucky I wasn't near a bookies, because I'd have bet my legs on Henrik Larsson scoring that one that Cole fluffed right at the end), so it's pretty daft to blame the guy who made the one that got punished when half of the team were overall considerably more useless than Mills I suppose. He kept giving the ball away time and time again. How the hell he didn't get booked for some of his lunges is anyone’s guess. He's not international quality. Infact I'd go as far to say that he's shat. Owen Hargreaves went missing after half time. He had an impressive first half but I'm not sure what happened in the second half. And Paul Scholes. What has happened to him? 2 years ago he could do no wrong in an England shirt, he was scoring for fun, now he can't even string 2 passes together. Heskey. A complete oaf. I don't understand how he gets in the Liverpool team nevermind the England side. Why did Sven take Vassel off? He was brilliant. He worked really hard and was the only player to impress. Dyer. Well I know he only had 15 minutes but if that's all he can do he might aswell go home. Owen was poor but if no one gives him the ball what can he do?

It really wouldn't be the same if we didn't have at least one player to vent our frustration upon in a world cup. It's simply the way of things. In Italia 90 we had the penalty missers Stuart Pearce and gutless Chris Waddle. During The 96 European Championships we had a failed penalty taker again in Gareth Southgate. Although he probably shouldn’t have taken the bloody thing in the first place. At least he had the heart to step and say "I'll take one boss". Unlike others I'd like to mention. At the 98 World Cup in France we had the hesitant Graeme Le Saux, who was apparently completely powerless to tackle his then club mate Dan Petrescu, in the dying minutes of the England v Romania game. Oh, and not to forget Beckham and the infamous tripping "incident" with Argentina. In Euro 2000 in Holland and Belgium it was the turn of the inexperienced, wholly inappropriate management style of Kevin Keegan. Not to mention the bumbling goal-keeping exploits of Nigel Martyn against Romania. And then Phil Neville’s totally unnecessary penalty gifting "tackle" with minutes to go. Now we have dear Danny Mills. Who wouldn't have had a prayer of getting in the World Cup squad was it not for Garry Neville’s ill-timed injury. Time to hunt down a picture of the chance-presenting defending in question, and throw darts at it until my frustration, and general disappointment of England poor showing today subsides. Calm.

Yes, I'm disappointed. It's a game we should have won, and we threw it away. They really need to improve in every area. We have the potential to do it and it really makes me mad when players do not play to their potential. This is the World Cup, if you can't motivate yourself for it then what is the point? There should've been three points - they were in the bag for the 1st half, a bit more real football instead of all the long ball cack, it would've delivered the second goal. Does Sven not think England are good enough to work through the opposition midfield. Vassels performance and Campbells goal were the only real plusses for me. Darius Vassel - I salute you. David Beckham - you've been injured and haven't played for a couple of months so fair enough. David Seaman - great couple of saves. The rest of the team - * If we can get a win or even a draw against Argentina then all will be forgiven. And seeing as I've reserved the entire day to party my brains out, they'd better play well. Today though I thought Vassell played ace, it must be said again. He had the determination and want to win the game, but there's no way he can make up or carry on his shoulders the 6-7 players who played crap. Only highlights for me were the first 30-odd minutes and seeing the Nike commercial at half-time. Anything after that was purely watching in hope Sweden don't score; as I surely wasn't watching to be entertained by England.

I have to say, part from the mistake that nealry cost us the game, Cole was superb at left back. Sol and Rio both had good games and Seaman pulled off some good saves but maybe could have done better on the goal (possibly unsighted)? Beckham contributed the first goal and to say he hasn't played in 8 weeks I think we can let him off for his average performance. Vassel was superb up front and Heskey didn't do quite as cack as he usually does, but still nothing special (if only we had a proper left sider). All of the above had a good-decent game for the full 90mins where as everyone else only had good first halfs. It could have been worse i suppose, but it's still 2 points (and possibly a place in the next round dropped) and it certianly won't be good enough against Argentina. Mills' final ball let him down a few times. He made a mistake, but he didn't play that bad. Heskey still can't trap a bag of cement. Owen had one of those games where nothing he did came off, like that second leg playoff against the Scots for Euro2000. They seem to still lack an intelligent midfielder who can unlock a defense. They seem to get desperate too quickly and play long ball. Unlike a lot of people, I believe that if the team plays to it's potential they could go far in this tournament. No team has stood out as being way better than the others yet.

Once again, Englandmanager syndrome strikes, leading to the best England player (Vassel) being substituted while that big, useless, iredeemably *, godawful donkey Emile Heskey stays on for the full 90 min. He's the worst player to pull on an England shirt in history - why keep picking him? About 5 goals all season, good at running but nothing else - no decent control or passing ability - and seemingly sod all confidence. Why, Sven, why? 4-4-2, Heskey, long balls, makes you wonder if he's as good as his rep or if he just had some lucky games. Sweeden merely realised in the second half that it didn't matter how bad they were when if they just played some football, they'd have a pretty good chance of beating England, to whom short passing and keeping the ball is still - after all these years - an alien concept.

My fiancee went to school with Danny mills, she said he was big headed, arogant and not liked all that much. See he aint changed much! Seriously though, its not all bad it's not like we are bottom of the group or anything - and thats the beauty of football, you can lose one game and the next game its all forgotten, you have another chance. I'm about ready to take up a career in professional football, just for the sake of kicking Danny Mills in the nads when the refs not looking. Suppose we have this parallel universe, where Mills makes the same mistake only the shot goes way over the bar, or the rest of the English defence don't just back off and allow it, and Cole makes the same mistake, except Larsson's first touch was good (as per 99% of the time) and he scores then. Sky News are interviewing "Punk violinist idiot" Nigel Kennedy about the England performance. I never knew his opinion mattered to anyone. The worst thing about the England performance was watching Spain vs Slovenia afterwards. All 20 on field palyers were passing, making decents runs and playing with lots of enthusiasm. The England players seemed as though they didn't want to play in the World Cup. Its like they felt they were being punished by having to actually play. It can't be hard to play better than Slovenia for christ's sake!

What a load of*.

I keep hearing people today blaming Emile Heskey...not on this forum, but some friends and some of the opponents at my cricket match.

He did the best he could!

It's obvious he's not an international left winger, but I wasn't too disappointed wih his performance. A couple of times he managed to make some decent powerful runs, and the Swedes (sp?) were scared of him. And he managed to stay on his feet most of the time too.

When he was moved into attack he did well when the service came, and he nearly scored once after a fantastic turn.

There's no doubt Vassell did well, but did he actually trouble the keeper? People were calling him the best player on the park, but although he had a lot of the ball, I didn't really see him get into any lethal positions. So anyone who says that Vassell shouldn't of been taken off, and Heskey should have done because he was 'crap', should take a few things into account.

Heskey is not a natural left-sided midfielder. He was told to play there.

When Heskey did get put in attack, he played well.

Vassell may have had a lot of the ball, but didn't seem to really threaten Hedman's goal.

And Heskey plays with Owen at Liverpool all the time, so why not use the partnership to England's advantage?

Anyone agree that Hargreaves was a bit disappointing?
