Damn the World Cup! Damn Football! Damn round spherical objects that shoot off in all directions! (footballs, what were you thinking of?)

What the hell am I moaning about? I AM NOT A FOOTBALL FAN! Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike football, but I'm not a supporter of any team either.

"Shut it Edgy! No one wants to hear you moaning about the World Cup! Live with it!" is what I bet you're all thinking now.

So you should, and I wish I could!

Usually I don't care about the world cup, and just for the sake of it, I'll start watching from the Semi-finals. I started watching football matches on the TV during Euro '96. I think it was England v Germany in the final and it all came down to penalties, and I really was rooting for England to win.

I don't know why though as I never really watched football before then. World Cup '98 and Euro 2000 didn't really interest me at all. However, thanks to those guys Baddiel and Skinner, singing this ruddy song on their show 'Unplanned', I've now listened to it many a hundred times.

Now, today, as I was walking home with some of my friends, we were chatting about this years World Cup. Because the exam started 1:30pm BST, and didn't finish til 4:40pm BST, neither of us had heard the France Senagol final score. All we knew was that at the 62nd minute, Senagol were still beating the European adn World Champions 1-0.

I wasn't that interested though. I tried changing the subject and just joking around, but football stil remained the main topic we were chatting about. Anyway, I got home, had something to eat and watched a bit of TV, and after watching BBC Wales news, Match of the Day started.

I flicked through the channels and all that was on BBC2 was Robot Wars, which has severely deteriorated over the years, and as far as I was concerned, there was only crap on the other channels. So I switched back on to BBC Wales.

Oh what joy, they finally evicted him from the country, the guy with the lowest street-cred' in British history: Gary Lineker. He's stuck in Japan for the world cup. Anyway, he introduced the highlights of the France v Senagol match.

I actually felt excited about watching this game! I know it wasn't the full 90 minutes (or 93 as it was apparently) but what I do know is I couldn't get out of my seat! I'm not a France Supporter, infact I'm not too keen on the French anyway, so I wasn't rooting for them. I was cheering, to the shock of myself, for Senagol!

What a brilliant goal!

Then, as soon as the highlights finished, I started thinking...What the hell am I doing? I'm had just watched the first match of the world cup, cheered a non-british side, and felt emotion as the ball went to the back of the net!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Now I'm going to be playing Fifa 97, or getting Fifa 2002 for the GameCube, so that I can control the action! Why have I let myself become a part of the world cup by watching it at such an early stage?

I'm not a fan! I only ever go to see Rugby matches! I'm a Cardiff RFC supporter, I support a welsh Rugby team, I support Wales in the internationals, and I certainly don't support England in the World Cup!

Right now, I'm going to continue supporting teams in the World Cup, mainly Japan (They brought us Nintendo for crying out loud and were subjected to the only two nuclear weapons to be used on civilians - they deserve something from the western world). Having said that, if England get to the Quarter Finals and above, I will cheer for them. I mean, it's better than France getting it again :)

But why oh why oh why has it happened to me? I personally think Football is a pansy's sport! I'm sure you'll see what I mean when to try and cheat, they jump in the air, fall purposely, hold their leg with tears dropping down their faces, just to get a free kick because there's no other way of them winning. Many a team does it. Swansea does in Rugby!

Anyway, if you can think up any cures, I would be eternally grateful as I do not want to be buying Fifa 2002 (or any other football game) for the GameCube in the near future! It's because I know I wont play them for long. Just please do me this favour! Save me!

That could be my cure! However, I don't have a MegaDrive... hmmmm, now if I can just get a bottle of chlorine and a fishtank, my plans of hybernation may just become complete!

It was the semi-final in Euro 96 when England met Germany ;-)

Edgy, you have turned the corner. Well done! Get ready for a month of excellent entertainment and emotion. Get into football, get into supporting England and get into the whole World Cup experience!

The World Cup is put on only every four years for a reason. The reason is to keep it special. This is the biggest stage where you see the World's best compete and all I can say is roll on Sunday cos I will be in the pub with my England shirt on singing the songs and revelling in the fantastic atmosphere.

When else would 30 million English people be all feeling the same emotion at any one time.

Fantastic......
