LOS ANGELES--For the software publishing industry, video games are a numbers game. And for now, Microsoft is on the losing end.
That's the upshot from the Electronics Entertainment Expo, the game industry's main trade show, where new games for Microsoft's Xbox have largely been limited to "me too" titles--games already appearing on other consoles. Microsoft has said it expects to have more than 200 games for the Xbox by the end of the year, but less than two dozen of those will be exclusive Xbox titles from third-party publishers.
Sony, by contrast, is touting high-profile exclusives from game publishers. "Grand Theft Auto III," the top-selling video game for the past few months, will remain available only for Sony's PlayStation 2, with publisher Take Two Interactive Software scrapping previous plans for an Xbox version. New versions of Eidos' "Tomb Raider" and Electronic Arts' "Medal of Honor" franchises will also be available only for the PS2, as will upcoming online and offline updates of the "Final Fantasy" series from longtime Sony booster Squaresoft.
Game publishers say it's a simple matter of economics. With Sony having sold more than 30 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide and the Xbox just edging up to the 4 million mark, they have to put their money where the market is. The result is that even the biggest Xbox supporters are producing two PlayStation 2 games for every Xbox title.
"We love the Xbox; we love Microsoft," said Jeff Brown, vice president of corporate communications for leading games publisher EA. "The worst thing that could happen to EA is to wake up one day to find Sony out there by itself. But when you make decisions short term, you have to look at the installed base. It's pretty clear if you're running a business selling games, you're simply going to sell more units on the PS2."
Console makers can try to tip the balance by offering marketing assistance to game publishers and even helping to pay development costs, but such efforts only go so far, said Luc Vanhal, president of Vivendi Universal Publishing. Vivendi earlier announced that "Malice," a game Microsoft touted as an exclusive at the Xbox's public unveiling, will also be available for the PS2.
"Microsoft is much more aggressive going after exclusive deals," Vanhal said. "They realize they really need to give an incentive to publishers to focus on the Xbox.
"But it still comes down to economics," Vanhal said. "It costs quite a bit of money to develop a game. I need to recoup that money, and it's easier to do that when you're selling to a market of 30 million."
Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said publishers have found it more expensive than many had expected to produce multiple versions of a game.
"There's a significant investment to having multiple retail packages," said Hirai, who kept E3 buzzing by declaring victory in the console wars. "At some point you have to say, 'Time out: Does it make sense for me to do a PlayStation exclusive? How much value do I get from doing other versions?'"
Publishers say the recent round of console price cuts will help Microsoft build an installed based for Xbox more quickly. Leading retailers have reported sales increases of up to 800 percent for both consoles since the Xbox and the PlayStation 2 were each lowered to $199.
But Microsoft also needs to break out of the commodity market that game consoles have become, they say. Despite clear technological advantages enjoyed by the Xbox, especially its built-in hard drive, Xbox games so far have pretty much played like those for competing systems.
"I believe the marketing mistake has been in letting people believe the Xbox is the same product as the other consoles," said Bruno Bonnell, president of Infogrames. The game publisher recently dealt another blow to Xbox by announcing plans to publish a PlayStation 2 version of its upcoming game based on "The Matrix," despite Microsoft having invested $1 million in recent Infrogrames acquisition Shiny Entertainment to fund development of the game.
"Xbox has a lot of features nobody's really taken advantage of yet," Bonnell said. "If someone built a game that fully utilizes the hard drive, the voice capability, people would see there's a real difference. The best evidence is the price: Microsoft knew they couldn't get people to pay extra for better technology, because they don't have a case yet for how that improves the games."
Don Coyner, Microsoft's director of marketing for Xbox, said it's typical for developers to need time to fully exploit a new console. He's confident that "Blinx," a Microsoft-created jump-and-run game that allows players to record and replay segments, will show developers how a hard drive can improve game design.
"'Blinx' is really the first game that takes full advantage of the hard drive," Coyner said. "Console developers are not used to working with a hard drive. It takes awhile for a developer to think about what it can do, and it takes someone who sees the potential to take advantage of it and really push gaming concepts forward."
Nintendo's survival strategy has been to come up with its own system-selling franchises, including characters such as Mario, Pokemon and Zelda. Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing and corporate affairs for Nintendo of America, said Microsoft could learn a thing or two from the Nintendo approach.
"We're worried about Microsoft," Kaplan said. "They've spent all this money building an online network, and they've lost focus on the games. Microsoft is doing technology, versus investing in content, and content drives this business."
So what do you think now ?????????
Ria
I don't hate the XBox. I don't say its rubbish. All I say is that I, yes ME garbe, prefer the Gamecube, because to ME - ME - it is better for me.
Please, stop being such a hippocrit (sp!)
Anyway, are consolses 'alive'?

This guy knows what he is talking about. XBOX is not dead yes it may be in 3rd place right now, BUT XBOX is close behind PS2 GC may took 1st place but it wont last long. MICROSOFT have been successful on the long-term run. When XP came out everyone hated it. but when they been on it and saw it run they went and brought one. Yes long-term success. The same will happen to XBOX so dont go round saying its Dead.
We all know why he started it in the first place. To get all your attentions and get you to reply to win a game. Im not here to win games. Im here to talk bout Gaming and how sad people are when they post message after message to win games.

How long did it take for the truly great games to start to appear on the PS2?
For some reason, when it comes to the XBOX, people want instantaneous results, and it's not going to happen.... in fact it's never happened.
Things take time.... How long do games take to develop?
This time next year the XBOX will be a rich source of quality and innovative titles.

I thought that was clear, but I'll reiterate: THE LACK OF ANY QUALITY SOFTWARE RELEASES FOR XBOX BETWEEN LAUNCH AND AUGUST/SEPTEMBER.
Before you go off on another rant, please read this post carefully from beginning to end.
> E3 gave the Xbox corner the best releases for this year
Not what the report posted elsewhere says though.

And it still hasn't been selling that well. You can't buy success. You have to have the backup. I don't think it was the £300 price that put people off of the Xbox; I think it was the software.

Shame about the weeks after launch though.

A nice idea, but ultimately a gimmick.

No doubt it's good. I'd question the bit about "best ever witnessed" though.

Since when has a HD EVER been considered standard on a console?

Which they've already failed in with a few dire launch games.

Good for you. I'm 30 and have been playing games for 22 years. Put your dick away sonny, cos mine's bigger.
> After owning a PS2 which was sold to buy my Xbox and having play tested
> the GameCube for over 6 months now I have come to the conclusion that I

Great. Owned a PS1 from launch, PS2 from launch, Xbox from launch and Gamecube from just after launch. I've come to the conclusion that I like the PS2 best of all, Gamecube second and Xbox third. And that's not counting my PC either.
Xbox - great machine, lacking software. My opinion. Can you understand that? Goodo.
> The Xbox is this and although the console delivers the most

That's great. I'm happy that you're happy with it. I'm not, and every time someone repeats why they are, I'll offer a differing opinion, just so tht neutrals get both sides. At least until I am happy with it. I'm not biased, I just have a preference.
I offered an opinion without slagging off the machine, and I don't appreciate people telling me that my opinion is wrong.
There's a lot of talk of 'fanboys' on these forums, and you're probably one of the biggest. Not everyone agrees with you.
> Being a very experienced and hardcore gamer
No matter how big you think it is, there's always someone with a bigger one.
> I have held almost every pad on the market and used most peripherals
> available for my chosen console.
Xbox controller is great for Halo, but pants for DoA3. I took the game back, because - despite big hands and 22 years of gaming, it's too clumsy and gave me cramps. A pad is very dependent on the individual using it, and is completely irrelevant with regard to "which machine is better", because they can ALWAYS be replaced.
> As well as being into games I am also a movie fan
Me too. I have a dedicated high-end player, so inclusion/exclusion of DVD is irrelevant to me as far as games consoles are concerned.
> Although facts and figures may seem irrelavant
> the DVD player in the Xbox is 4 times the speed of the PS2 DVD player
> and when watching such high quality material you can notice the
> difference greatly.
More irrelevant than you realise. DVD drive speed is irrelevant when watching movies because all movies play back at 1x speed, and drive speed has nothing to do with playback quality.
> The Xbox is probably the size of your average VCR, but it needs to be
> as it houses the most complex and original system that no other
> console has done so far.
No, it's big because that was the only way to sufficiently cool the Pentium CPU inside it. Japanese CPU's are smaller, more efficient, and multitask properly.
> In the centre of the console lies the famous "X" which makes the Xbox
> stand out
So... the Xbox has to be big because it's got the big X in the middle?
> and show people what it is!
In case they miss the big "X" across the entire top of the case, you mean?
> I really like the design of it and the colours really appeal to my
> nature, it is slick, futruristic and it looks powerful.
Not that the looks or size are particularly relevant, but since when did big and boxy constitute 'slick'?
> Instead of doing what other consoles have done to this date the Xbox
> has taken a brave and successful leap into adding an " 8GB Hard
> Drive " which neither the PS2 or Game Cube have done
They haven't done it because it doesn't need doing. PS2 will have the option of a drive five times the capacity which will fit it into a console half the size and be used for much more than game saves and loading times. Gamecube is a pure games machine with no pretensions toward anything else, and doesn't need a HD.
> With this amount of finacial backing the future of the Xbox is set to be
> a solid a very successful one
I've no doubt that it will be successful. Never said otherwise. All three machines will, but there are varying degrees of success.
> I am very impressed with the Xbox so far
Then you're lucky. I haven't been. In fact, it's the least impressed I've ever been with any computer or games system I've bought. I stress again - not because the machine is bad, but because the software is lacking IN MY OPINION.
> and with the gaming power to back it up I feel that the competition will
> have to really boost their ideas up otherwise the
> Xbox will conquer all!
Face it, that just isn't going to happen. Particularly in the case of the PS2, the competition are over the finishing line before the Xbox got out of the pits.
> I hope both the GameCube and PS2 can compete with the Xbox as it will
> make the gaming market a very interesting place to be around in the

Everyone - EVERYONE - knows that the battle for second place is between Xbox and Gamecube.
Did you read and digest the original post, or just skim it and enter rant mode?
> And with a release callendar looking like this:
You weren't going to list them, remember? But since you did, do some checking and see just how many of those titles are also out on other platforms - and in most cases, first.
> How in the world of gaming can you say that it is dropping off? You
> need your head seeing to!
No, I need decent games for my Xbox before I decide to sell it.
> The console has only been out 6 weeks! 6 WEEKS
I make it ten weeks actually. And mine hasn't been on in the last five, apart from viewing a magazine coverdisc.
> thats all and look what it had done/is doing!
Not a hell of a lot that the others haven't from where I'm standing.
For the record - because you seem to have missed it elsewhere:
I am NOT anti-Xbox. I have a bit of a downer on it because I've so far found it disappointing in terms of software.
I have three games for it - Halo, PGR and Munch's.
Halo was great, and got steadily more impressive as I played. I got to the Library levels, and it has become tedious and repetitive.
PGR was fun, but has become tedious now that all I have left to do is race on my own through cones. That is not why I bought a racing game.
Munch's Oddysee is in my opinion the best game on Xbox.
I wanted the Buffy game, but after seeing in-game footage, it looks very disappointing.
Looking at the Xbox release schedule, I can see one or two games that I will want before the end of the year.
Other games that I would want will be available on the other systems first, so I will buy them on those systems. I'm not bothered about the "best looking version" if the gameplay is pretty much the same.
That's why I won't buy GTA3 on the PC having played the PS2 version, and also why I didn't buy Deus Ex or Half Life on PS2 after playing the PC versions. Hence it's also why I won't wait for Xbox TOCA Race Driver (and others) when the PS2 version is out months beforehand.
What the Xbox needed - and still needs - is AT LEAST one top-quality triple-A title per month over the summer in order to keep pace with the competition; not a glut of (possibly) fantastic titles just prior to Xmas and another lull afterwards.
You seem keen on personal opinions, so here's mine:
For me personally, the PS2 offers me the biggest variety of the the types of games that I want to play. More than Xbox, and more than Gamecube. Therefore, in my opinion, for me alone, regardless of what you or anyone else thinks, the PS2 is the best console. It hasn't stopped me buying the others to sample their 'delights' though.
It doesn't need the fastest processor, the biggest hard drive, the best graphics, the most sound channels, the biggest advertising budget, the green X, the blue light, Pokemon, or anything else - as long as it gives ME the games the I want to play. Which it does.
After that, the Gamecube currently offers me the next largest number of games that I want to play. And finally, bringing up the rear is the Xbox.
As I said above, I'm not biased - I have a PREFERENCE.
It may change. It may not. As release dates get closer and more detail about games filters through, I may change my mind. Who knows.
I'm currently very tempted to trade in my Xbox; but at the same time, I'm reluctant. Firstly because the minute I do, there'll be something which I really want to play on it. Secondly because I don't like admitting to myself that I've wasted that much money.
Despite all the careful consideration, any trade-in will most likely be the result of a spur-of-the-moment urge. I'll wake up one morning and think, "That's it... bye bye" and pack it up and take it to Game.
Partly it's my own stupid fault. As YH has pointed out to me, I should probably have checked release schedules etc. before buying the machine, as I would probably have saved myself this dilemma.
So maybe I shouldn't be so negative about it. I try not to be, but that's just a measure of how disappointing the whole Xbox experience has been for me so far. But I do sincerely hope that it manages to put that right.
At the moment, though, I could not honestly say to anyone that Xbox is the best machine around - nor could I recommend that anyone buy one until much more, better software is available.
Well, that's my opinion. Hopefully at least some of you will respect it.
That last post was basically all of your posts stuck into one big lump!
AND FOR THE LAST TIME! STOP LISTING BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER AS A GREAT GAME!
> It is going be the first console ever to go on-line with 'Xbox
> Live'.
The Dreamcast is the first console to go online. Xbox will be the first of the next gen machines to be online.
Spent £500 million on marketing the console.
Invested £2 billion between now and next year to promote the console world wide.
It has given us the best launch titles in history with, Halo, Dead Or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, RalliSport Challenge, Max Payne, Amped and Oddworld: Munchs Oddysee.
Brought us the best video game ever made to this date in Halo.
Promised 200 titles before christmas.
Brought us the most powerful games console to date and even the Japanese after all this time haven't managed to do what Microsoft have done with the Xbox.
It is going be the first console ever to go on-line with 'Xbox Live'.
Included a bulit in Hard Drive to store music, extras, speeds up load times and stores saves.
The first console to allow customized sound tracks to be played back through a game.
Brought us the best graphics ever witnessed with Halo, Dead Or Alive 3 and RalliSport Challenge.
This is what I found from the publisher of channel website:
The Xbox:
Mega graphics / sound, the video output is of the highest quality, no external memory cards needed, no damned joypad expanders required, internet ready....
THIS is how a game console should be...not SUCKING your dosh for things that should be kit as standard !
Personal Opinion:
I'm not a game player as such, but I played Halo on the X-Box at home, and I must say I was completely astounded at the quality of this machine and game. This is something spectacular, the graphics / sound quality could not effectively be improved, the gameplay in Halo is breathtaking, talk about sweaty palms...
Lets hope Microsoft pushes this console forward with this level of quality consistently.
This is GAMING folks, get your butts down to your local game store and kit up with an X-Box (and Halo), you wont be disappointed !
This is my oppinion:
After gaming for over 10 years and owning most of the consoles I am expereinced in this field and I love to game and discuss in both reviews and discussions. At the age of 15 I am always looking for the next big thing in both gaming and sport. After owning a PS2 which was sold to buy my Xbox and having play tested the GameCube for over 6 months now I have come to the conclusion that I like the Xbox best out of all the 3 next generation consoles.
In the past I have enjoyed the pleasure Nintendo gave me, I have owned the NEZ, SNEZ and Nintendo 64 (Snez being my favourite) but after purchasing my N64 I lost faith in Nintendo as I felt that the console was a let down. I owned 007 Goldeneye (great game), Mission Impossbile, Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 (great fun) but this was all I ever wanted to buy for the console. I know games like Perfect Dark and Zelda were superb additions to the console but I never got around to purchasing them. I sold my N64 3 weeks ago now and I will probably never buy a Nintendo product again. Nintendo do not appeal to my gaming nature and although they aim at casual games I want something more hardcore (stricktly gaming sense) that appeals to what I like, for this I found the Microsoft Xbox.
I know this may seem childish but I like to own what is the most powerful! The Xbox is this and although the console delivers the most advanced sytem in itself I feel that it also has the games to back it up. I won't list the games again as I am sure we are all aware of what is up and coming to the console and I feel that bench-mark titles are among them. One of the games that most excites me on the Xbox is 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' which is a game derived from the PC and graphically enhanced for the Xbox. I am into first person, third person and driving gaming genres and after researching the console for over 3 months before purchase and analysing the games one by one I feel that the Xbox will give me all of what I want and more.
Being a very experienced and hardcore gamer, I have held almost every pad on the market and used most peripherals available for my chosen console. After play testing the GameCube pad and owning a PS2 one the Xox pad appeals to me more than ever! The sheer size of it makes my hands feel comfortable and the button positioning is great. For racing games the shoulder pads are used to accelerate and brake which I find the most innovative addition to a racer yet. The D-Pad and Analog sensitivity suits me greatly and so far it has worked superbly with the 5 games I have played with it. Alhough I am yet to test every genre out whilst using the game pad I am very confident that it will suit every game it plays with.
As well as being into games I am also a movie fan, I have 17 DVD's with an 18th coming very soon and without a DVD player in my bedroom all of these would go to waste. This was a very big help when desciding between purchasing an Xbox or GameCube as it would effect the way I used and played on it. Although the DVD playback is expensive I will be investing in it very soon to fill in my entertainment needs. Although facts and figures may seem irrelavant the DVD player in the Xbox is 4 times the speed of the PS2 DVD player and when watching such high quality material you can notice the difference greatly.
The Xbox is probably the size of your average VCR, but it needs to be as it houses the most complex and original system that no other console has done so far. In the centre of the console lies the famous "X" which makes the Xbox stand out and show people what it is! I really like the design of it and the colours really appeal to my nature, it is slick, futruristic and it looks powerful.
The console itself is home to 4 USB controller ports, front loading DVD drive and the standard eject button all on the front of it. The back of the console consists of your standard Audio/Video out port, the power supply outlet and a special digital port for HDTV.
Instead of doing what other consoles have done to this date the Xbox has taken a brave and successful leap into adding an " 8GB Hard Drive " which neither the PS2 or Game Cube have done into the console itself to cut down on the loading times and make it easier for game saves onto the Xbox instead of the usual memory card, although the memory card can be bought if data needs to be transferred from one Xbox to another. The Hard Drive will also eventually be used to download extra characters, levels and gaming demos.
Microsoft have promised a $2 Billion invest into the future of the Xbox and with the games that are coming out it will really help to promote and advertise gaming worldwide. With this amount of finacial backing the future of the Xbox is set to be a solid a very successful one that will please gamers all round with the market having such prosporous investers which will help to give gamers world wide a better deal.
I am very impressed with the Xbox so far, load times have been superb, the graphics I have witnessed are the best I have ever seen and the speed at which games run at (frame rate) seems to be at least 60fps for all the games out/coming out on it. The sheer power of the console impresses me and with the gaming power to back it up I feel that the competition will have to really boost their ideas up otherwise the Xbox will conquer all!
I hope both the GameCube and PS2 can compete with the Xbox as it will make the gaming market a very interesting place to be around in the next few years. With award winning titles out and on the way I can only see one way forward for this console and it is >>>>>>!
I hope you have enjoyed reading my opinioin and feelings about the Xbox this Cyclone, Sibs and anyone else who thought I was just a stupid fool that spammed just to annoy, I want to get on with people on here and I resorted to stupid tactics which I was condeming in the first place! I will change from now on and not react as quickly to fools that do not know what they are talking about in the first place.

How in the world of gaming can you say that it is dropping off? You need your head seeing to! The console has only been out 6 weeks! 6 WEEKS, thats all and look what it had done/is doing! This year is going to be storm for the console and I just can't wait!
Thankyou for reading!
We all knew that this was going to happen, simply because PS2 is just SO big on a global scale. Well, everyone except MS seemed to know, anyway.
Sony will not be overtaken, at least in this 'round' of console hardware. It will be interesting to see how the next machines from each company fare, but if Sony get in first again, who knows? It could be a repeat.
The market is easily big enough to support all three, and to have all three do extremely well. But there is always a market leader, despite that. This round and the last belong to Sony, but the next...?
But it certainly does justify my personal perception that Xbox just does not have the software. Xbox needs high quality exclusives, and it doesn't have enough of them. And until it sells more and it becomes financially viable for developers to do so, it won't have them.
But as the report states, for every Xbox title, there are two PS2 titles - and Sony have more high-profile titles in the pipeline at the moment.
I've just got back from lunch, where I went into Game to ask about the current trade-in price of Xbox (£90 to £120 depending on condition, if you're interested), and the guy (store manager) said to me that he also had one, and "to be honest, the software is letting it down".
They've apparently already had a number of Xboxes returned in exchange for PS2s and Gamecubes because people were fed up with them, and they have also had lots of software returned in part-exchange for other formats.
"There's nothing worthwhile for Xbox until around September time, whereas Nintendo are making sure they have at least one top game out every two weeks." His words, not mine.
I said a while ago that MS should have made sure they had solid titles to drip-feed through over the summer. That's seems to be what Nintendo are doing, and it's paying off. Best launch or not, best specs or not, MS definitely seem to have dropped the ball.
DANGER OF SERIOUS HEALH RISK!
Do not enter this topic tonight when gare123 reads it.
I REPEAT DO NOT ENTER THIS TOPIC TONIGHT WHEN GARBE123 READS IT!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
It's only been out 2 months, of course it will have sold less than the PS2! Give it until Christmas, and I suspect we'll see a rosier picture for Xbox.
