Our band ordered a 44-track recorder the other day and it is expected to come through by post tommorow.

Exams during the week so I don't think we will be using it until around mid-week.

I'm posting this really for tips on recording on these multitrack recorders as I have never used one before and nor have any of the other band members. Should be pretty simple how to work the thing though, it sounds simple and if anything goes wrong there's always the manual :-)

But I am just asking for tips.

The only major problem I can think of at the moment which is suppose to be is that the room we are in is pretty small and so I heard recording may be bad quality? I don't think it will be a problem though.

Oh and another one...recording drums.

I saw a microphone set which we told our drummer about in a shop the other day. It's just hooking up all the microphones to the drums and then go from there and he is going to buy. But, in the meantime, whats the best method of recording drums? Just like using a standard microphone?

I don't know if many of you have exprience in this but if you have please share all knowledge.

Thanks.

Thanks, I will do :-)

We are just beginning so we are just using a basic multitracker to start with, see how things go. It's a Tascam MP-sum number :-P

You shouldn't have any problem with the sound for instruments with a jack - the size of the room only affects the echo of microphones (vocals, drums, etc). You may want to invest in a compressor or a gate device - they only record sound at certain frequencies, so you cut out most of the background sounds and focus on the instrument.

At Uni I use Seisenheimer clipons, which actually clip on to the rim of the drum. You can position them how you want and they have rubber fixtures, so there's no resonance from the kit. When I recorded some stuff with my band once, there was 24 mics on the kit! So far I've only had to use 7 - Hi-hat, Snare, Toms, Kickdrum, bass drum and an overhead. If you need any help just ask. What multitracker is it, btw?
