Ooh close to a nuclear war apparently... well it will probably never happen... even if it does you won't be here to say I was wrong :P

So two Third World developing countries with unstable politics... oooh good old UK and America to jump in and save Pakistan and India from having a wee fight in a small corner of the world...

I wonder who sold them the weapons in the first place...

Hmmm

Hmmm

This country sucks because we have to pay huge great bundles of tax, and tax on tax, stealth tax and extra tax. Then we give half of it away to people who have never paid any.

Meanwhile, the county's fine people are constantly disrupted by bunches of young thugs who think they are immune from the law. Even when these idots are are apprehended, the legal system prefers to look after because it does not have the courage to do the 'orrible things which they deserve.

That was actually sarcasm by myself and I know nuclear war would never happen as any side would never win and I hope most governments etc would have that known.

This was mainly an attack on the arms industry but I see most of you missed that point.

Assuming these two countries go to war, and considering they are both nuclear powers, does it worry anyone else, that all the big name countries don't seem that bothered by what's going on? If they did nuke each other the political and socio-economic results would be devastating for the whole region, and would have dire results around the world, economically and environmentally, so surely every other country in the world really should be begging them to stay cool. Actually, the world will have to do more than beg to calm this down. I kinda get the feeling they don't care what we think.

I'm sure that the Americans and Russians have a few anti-missile tricks up their sleeves and our circling around the two countries at the moment. Both their anti-missile systems are in fact shate, but that's not relevant. They're not actually going to go to war, it's just people are worried by a speech Prime Minister Vajpayee gave the troops. But belligerent speeches are what politicians always give the troops. There's no need to panic. I doubt any war would be nuclear and both sides acknowledge that a nuclear war would be ridiculous. The only problem is if one country is backed into a corner, they may be used as a last resort.

All Muslim countries declare war on India, China too as it supplies weapons to Pakistan and is Pakistans Friend. China will try and invade Tiwan as if the US trys to stop China it brings America into the war. IF this happens, then America enacts NATO, and it's pan-America alliance, Britain then enacts it's alliances with Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia (which may have declared war on India being a mainly Muslim country, so Britain could actually end up fighting the US, but I doubt it). While I can just about believe that parts of the Muslim world would be dumb enough to join a conflict which has just gone nuclear, I can't believe the west would go inside a thousand miles of the place until the dust settles. Interesting facet of the India/Pakistan conflict is China. Pakistan/Indian conflict totally f@cks the USA strategy in South/East Asia as it is designed (in the long-term) to try to ensure China does not totally dominate the region. I am sure China greatly enjoys these Indian/Pakistani squabbles.

Assuming the 2 nations go to war, and assuming that things go out the way they have in the past. Pakistan will lose. Outnumbered and outgunned. They are insane enough, however, to use their nuclear option if the only other choice is total defeat. Now, unless they have managed some spectacular advances in the past 4 years (that they didn't have the funding for) Pakistan can only nuke about one third of India (that third which is closest to Pakistan). This is due to the fact that Pakistan only has short and medium range delivery systems. So, that part of India would be rendered radioactive.

India might respond, but given that by this stage most of Pakistan would be under Indian control anyway (or about to become Indian) this is not guaranteed. All depends on how badly the Indian army gets damaged by the Pakistani nuclear strike. If they did respond, Pakistan would be flattened, completely and utterly. So, worst case scenario? North-western third of India and all of Pakistan nuked flat, and totally uninhabitable for the next few thousand years. God only knows where the fall-out would go, I don't know enough about the meteorology of the area. I suspect it would go west (over Middle East and Mediterranean), but that's based on the fall-out spread of Chernobyl (which is far enough away that the wind patterns might not be the same).

Personally I doubt it will get that far, 10,000 US troops in Pakistan at the moment and the US and EU have a lot of economic clout with India (and even more on Pakistan). I don't think the Indians have much choice. Pakistan seems to be engaged in a policy of arming, training and supporting militants who engage in attacks on Indian forces. Pakistan is essentially a state totally geared toward armed conflct - in any 1 year the Government spends 50% of it's budget on debt repayments, 45% on the military, the remaining 5% on health, education, infrastructure etc. I think India has been more than patient about this issue, and sooner or later threats have to be followed by action.

As for the nature of such a conflict - it would likely be limited to the Kashmir area - the Indians would most likely restrict any offensive to this frontier as I doubt the Indians have any interest in annexing Pakistan. As for the US, UK and other forces in Afghanistan/pakistan - that has little bearing on the issue as International forces are not going to get involved in a shooting war between India and Pakistan. Also, if India avoids invading the Pakistan strategic heartland then Musharaff is unlikely to escalate to the nuclear level. Even if the US/UK/whomever did try to intervene and impose a peace they would not have the capability in the region. Not to mention the fact that it would be extremely unwise. If Western efforts fail to prevent a conflict then they are best advised to limit their efforts to diplomatic initiatives/pressure. India will also be a major power in the future and with Pakistan on 1 side and China to the North (both of whom India has fought wars with in the last 30 years), India has a real security dilemma. India cannot afford to be lacking in resolve, if only because it sets a precedent for the future. It's a tough world out there, India has no real allies, so action is necessary.

There's many possibilities - it go many ways. Jeez, I'm exhausted :p

More importantly where do they get the money to buy these weapons? From selling drugs in countries like the UK and USA...

But it only takes one nuke from Pakistan to wipe them all out.

It's good that America and Russia have signed a treaty to get rid of 1/3 of their nuclear arms....but they each have enough firepower to wipe out all human life on this Earth many times over still anyway.

War is good, from an American POV. It creates jobs and a sense of unity. Honestly.

anyone see the last in the latest series of the Mark Thomas Product? It was about arms sales.

It was very funny, and very enlightening.

Business is screwed up.
