About A Boy, Peter Pan 2, Spider-man, Harry Potter 2, LOTR 2 (although that might be next year), The Scorpion King, Spy Kids 2, Men In Black 2, Stuart Little 2, Ali G Indahouse, Resident Evil, Vanilla Sky, Die Another Day (next bond film) and others.
See what I'm getting at? One last hint.
The 2 most successful films of last year were definitely Bridget Jones' Diary and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
The point is, every film mentioned above is one of the following: A sequel, a prequel, a sequel-prequel, a spin-off, or a film based on a book, videogame or t.v show. And if you think about, some of the most famous films of all time have sequels coming in the next few years that we can't wait for: Terminator and The Matrix.
The question isn't "What happened to my lunch?" (shock horor) but it's "What happened to originality?" The answer: "We shall never know." But it would still be nice if we had a higher love for normal, not-based on anything films.
But if you think about it, it was only 2 years ago when we would call the most succesful films of this year original, as they were Gladiator, Meet the Parents, Chicken Run and the Perfect Storm among others.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could go back to a stage like this?
And if you think about it, most of the time you come out of a sequel or spin-off movie, you find yourself saying it wasn't as good as the original.
If cinema goes on like this, then we may never see another Gladiator, Matrix or other original idea again, and we may have to live with nothing but Academy fell-for-it old guy saves-the-days and several Spy Kids 7 movies.....
There is another thing that could happen: people will simply lose interest in film.
And that would suck.
So be greatful for original film.
> Memento rocked.
It kicks ath. I heard they're releasing a special-edition dvd in the U.S, does anoyone know if there'll be a U.K release?

Serendipity was worse than America's Sweethearts. I saw it on a plane, so BAD!

I saw that the other week. I've seen much better Cusack films. Practically every Cusack film, in fact. Funny in a depressingly commercial way though.
That’s perhaps why so many films like the ones mentioned in the original post become so popular. Plus there is the fact original, new films don't have as big an audience as the next James bond sequel.
Its sad but true, the big Hollywood companies don't want to put these original films in cinemas everywhere because they don't think they'll bring in the profit, whereas a special effects laden film such as scorpion king will. That’s how Hollywood works, profit before originality.
And LotR:FotR was last year. And it kicked Potter behind.
It's very well constructed and acted etc, but it just seemed to clever and too smarmy.
I sat there thinking "Yes very clever but I would like to know who did it"
Director "And how's about this TWIST!"
Me "Yep, clever. Now, if I could just please carry on to see who did it"
Director "And now THIS TWIST! EH? EH?"
Me "Yes yes, well done, I didn't expect that. Now, as I said, please c-"
Director "And now for the FINAL TWIST!"
Me "Uh-huh, look, I just want to know who did it now please, I get it"
Directory "And one FINAL TWIST! EH? CLEVER EH? EH?"
Me "Oh for christ sakes"

Not a bad film, just not one for me.
